A Day in Heaven

Question:

Great story! Much more moving than any SportsCentury program, anyday- Glad you had a great one out there, bill- Devon – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I woke up this morning at 5:30AM and checked the outdoor thermometer. It was 29 on eastern Long Island and the weatherman promised no better than 38 all day.  By 8AM, it had climbed to about 34, so I bundled up and headed out to the local muni.  I then experienced a golfer’s vision of heaven. Nobody was on the tees and there were only about 8 cars in the parking lot.  I teed off by myself and got to play an entire round with just me and the seagulls.  Twice during my round, I passed guys on adjacent holes.  Aside from those intrusions, it was bliss. There was no wind today, which is an oddity since the course runs hard along Peconic Bay.  Even though the temp never reached 40, the conditions were ideal.  To make matters even more heavenly, I was able to finish my round in 2 hours and 25 minutes.  A normal round on this track runs in the 5 hour range. I took up this game 3 years ago, when my wife decided that I needed a hobby and had clubs made for me (I’m 6′6" tall) for my 50th birthday. I’ve played the game with a vengeance since then and have actually had several rounds in the 80’s this year.  The only negative for today’s round was the double bogeys on the 17th and 18th for a total of 90. All together now, let’s spell C-H-O-K-E. Thanks for listening. bill hempfling Before you buy.

Indian Island is a great little course.  I played it several years ago when my brother was renting a house in East Hampton.  Wonderful views of the bay. Glad you enjoyed it. Remsleep – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – John….a trip to Ireland was in the offing for us in 1999, until my daughter decided she was getting married.  As you can imagine, that put a crimp in our travel plans.  Your heavenly visit sounded magnificent. Maybe my wife and I will do the same in 2000. As to the muni I played yesterday, it was Indian Island in Riverhead. I’ve never played Montauk Downs; but I’ve heard it’s a great place.  By the way, I got out and played again this morning….although it was a bit chillier than yesterday. Have a very merry Christmas. bill hempfling Dear Bill: I’m glad you tasted a bit of heaven this morning.  However, if you think that was heaven – consider this—-5:30AM on the first of June on the first tee of Lahinch, Co. Clare, Ireland…..and from 5:30AM to 8AM all I saw was the occasional rabbit and a couple of goats.  This piece of heaven can only be found in my native and beloved Lahinch golf club. Was the muni you played at this morning Montauk Downs, by any chance?  I played it this past  June – a great layout and a good test from the back tees. If you are playing in December you have the bug – keep up the good work – enjoy – Happy Holidays!! And please continue to share your very special golf experiences!! Hey, even further south in Wi the golf courses are empty on Packer game days. I love it! And…if someone is out there playing it means they aren’t a Packer fan, which in my book is a good thing. While I dread the fall because of the weather, after 2 years up here in WI, I have come to realize that the fall does bring Packer games and empty golf courses…. Heather – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –        I live just outside of GreenBay WI. When the Packers have a game in GreenBay I hit the golf coarse. Alot of times I’m the only one there. I play as many balls as I want and practise many different shots. And I watch the blimp float over GreenBay.

Have a wonderful holiday – and if you ever decide to go to Ireland – let me know!  I work with Aer Lingus Irish Airlines and, having been born in Ireland, I’d be glad to help with any info you would like about golf and places to visit. A day in heaven to me, is anytime I’m on the golf course.  Hot, cold, windy, crowded, whatever.  I AM A GOLFAHOLIC!  If I play good, great or mediocre, If’s fine.  Do you think I’m crazy?    I am a 22-24 handicapper striving to get to 20.  I’m retired, so if  it’s not pouring rain, I’m playing.  My goal this summer was to break 90 and I did.  I’ve only done it 3 times so far but that’s my goal everytime I play. I WILL DO IT AGAIN. RSGr’s HAVE A GREAT CHRISTMAS AND A SAFE NEW YEAR.   Julie

I could not agree more. Yesterday, they were calling for temps in the low 40’s, though I believe the temps actually got up to the upper 40’s.. Iand my partner were able to play 27 holes in a 6 hour time frame….Loved it…Though I am sacraficing warmth this time of year, it is nice to play a round without having to wait on every hole!!!!

Then forsake the Ant-Hill and move someplace civilized…!

Around here, if it’s less than 60, there is no-one on the course. This is by far the best time of year for golf….high 40’s today, low 50’s tomorrow! And it even rained this morning!!! Wet and 50 degrees! BRRRR…stay home and be bored to a stupor by the NFL! Rob – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I woke up this morning at 5:30AM and checked the outdoor thermometer. I suspect your higher intellect has frozen up due to local temps…Be assured the temp in heaven NEVER drops below a nice tingly 68*. Perhaps you’d really enjoy a round here in the summer…by about 11AM it’s 103* and some places the golf is FREE from then till 4pm. It gives the EMTs something interesting to do. ]]]Z[[[

I’m with you Bill.  Down here in Philly, jumped all over the muni courses, and if it’s under 50, only those who know the game come out and play.  The tank top & sneaker wearing crowd are home watching the Eagles lose. I played 22 holes in just under 2 3/4 hours, and I enjoyed myself.  I saw maybe 15 other people, and 6 of them were on 1 hole.  I played 2-3 balls per hole to practice, and kept my best score, my worst score, etc. If I could do that all year round . . . – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I woke up this morning at 5:30AM and checked the outdoor thermometer. I live in Nebraska and when our "pro team" (the Huskers) take the field it’s the same way.  Beautiful fall days and courses all to yourself.  It is close to heaven.  We don’t get a blimp though… Art "This is the earliest I’ve ever been late by." – Yogi Berra
