8 Days in Thailand

Question:

Hi Brad, zum Thema "*8 Days in Thailand*": We wish to vist an island or similar resting place for 6 days and nights (relaxing and recovering from our earlier travels) and then stay in Bangkok for the last two days and nights shopping and looking around prior to departure from BNK airport.

Sorry, but my englisch language is not the best. I will say to you   ….. You must go to: HUA HIN !!!! I tink, a few days spending in Hua   Hin and you have enjoj. The distance to BKK is not so far away. Im   thinking it would be 200 KM. Take a train to BKK and you see for a   short time the real life. I`m shure you like it [i hope so]. And after   this time you can go shopping in BKK for one or two days. Please tell me, if you spending a few days in HUA HIN. cu Claus

We are also after accomadation that is $50 – $70 US / night averaged over the six nights.   What do you thinkabout Koh Samui, or do you suggest elsewhere? We also need help as to where to stay in Bangkok.  We want clean rooms and to be walking distance to the shops/sights, but also not too expensive as we will be fairly skun by then, I think. First, make sure your bags are coded for BKK, Don Muang Airport, Bangkok, otherwise they’ll arrive back in Australia before you do! My friends tell me that Samui is a very beautiful place.  I have been to a smaller island, Samet, which is a short boat ride from Pattaya.  Be warned, though, that with the exception of some water sports, there is not much to do but sit on the beach (and I think Samui is similar).  And sitting on the beach has its limits because of the intense sun and heat.  A weekend was all I could handle.  If you do go, reserve a room with air conditioning! I really enjoyed Northern Thailand.  I spent a week with a friend in and around Chiang Mai.  The weather is more moderate (in the mountains, it gets downright chilly) and there is a lot of art and culture to experience.  Chiang Mai is a wonderfully relaxed city (a provincial town compared to Bangkok) and there are lots of fun things to do outside the city on day trips or longer.  I can make some enthusiastic recommendations about lodging, restaurants and shopping in the area if you are interested. Your decision to stay downtown in Bangkok is wise.  Traffic is impossible!  Cabs are cheap, but you can literally spend hours in them.  I can’t make any specific recommendations for hotels, unfortunately, having only spent one night downtown in an excellent, but expensive hotel (the Evergreen Laurel, USD150).  A few suggestions:  make time for drinks on the back patio of the Oriental Hotel.   Also, read the Ramayana and develop a basic understanding of Buddhism – you’ll understand so much more of what you’re seeing. One other hint.  If you are arriving very late or departing very early, you may want to consider staying at the Amari Airport Hotel.  It is a hugely convenient hotel (5-minute walk from the international terminal), that saves you the anxiety of getting to the airport in time.   Their rack rate is very expensive, Baht4000++, but most everyone stays at some discount (ask them for a corporate rate – name any Thai company) and you should be able to stay for closer to Baht3000++.  (Make a Thai friend and ask them to make your reservation in Thai and expect a rate closer to Baht 2200++!)   Chok Dee! For rest, I think Samui is a good choice. It’s still a bit old fashioned and I found it’s an easy place to make friends. You might stay the first night or two at the Cheweng Regency and find a bungalow someplace you like better. Some friends stayed at the Princess Villa (or Village?), on the far end of Cheweng Beach. It’s a bunch of old Thai style houses on stilts that have be rebuilt with modern interiors. You are surrounded by trees so you feel like you are living in the jungle. Have dinner at the Beverly Hills restaurant about half way to Lamai beach. It has a fantastic view. If I were you I’d skimp on the lodging on Samui. You can easily find an air-cond bungalow for $20-$30. Spend your last two nights in Bangkok at the best hotel you can afford along the river. You can often get a room at the Oriental, Royal Orchid Sheraton, or Shiangri-La for under $100 off-season. Check your credit cards, mileage plans, and any work discounts you might have at the Sheraton. It’s VERY romantic and you don’t get a chance to stay at that caliber of a hotel often.
