Question:
My TV picture tube blew and I was listening to a Tear Drop Putter infomercial, it sounded very interesting… Can anybody give us a report on this item? Any time over spin is mentioned about putting I always think about Bobby Locke. He had overspin on his putts and dropped many a putt. I belong toa golf club in the Hilton Head area . well about 6 yrs ago i man from hilton head came up with the tear drop putter . the over spin was great and just about all of our members at that time as we were a nw club bought one well now the fun started if you pick up you head just a tad you will top the ball and it goes no where as of no there are only ( 1 ) person who still uses it…
Once I managed to parse it, John’s comment made a lot of sense. Think about the following facts of putter design: 1. The loft of a putter (yes, a putter has loft) will determine a lot about how the ball rolls. 2. You need a higher-loft putter (4-5 degrees) for "shaggy" greens, to get the ball up on top of the grass. 3. You need a lower-lofted putter (2-3 degrees) for fast greens, to get the ball rolling sooner. 4. In spite of all the myths, a ball does not start out with overspin. But it gets to an overspin state the fastest with lower loft, assuming the green is fast enough to allow it. 5. Negative loft is BAD. John’s description says it all ("top the ball and go nowhere"). The point of a teardrop putter is its versatility. That’s also its curse, unless you have unbelieveable control of the height of your putter as it impacts the ball. Consider: - The teardrop putter has a cylindrically curved face with a radius of no more than 1/2". - That means that the effective loft at impact depends entirely on how high the club is above the ground. Since the putter’s radius is so much smaller than the ball’s, it depends on where the putter blade strikes the ball. - When you do the trigonometry, the effective loft of a teardrop putter goes from 0 to 5 degrees in just a bit over 1/16". That is: Strike the ball at the equator: zero degrees. Strike the ball 1/16" below the equator: 5 degrees. Strike the ball just above the equator: topped, goes nowhere. Are you good enough to use the putter to its full verstatility? (That means controlling your putter height to maybe a 1/64" height within a 1/16" range, depending on the greens you’re playing.) If you’re not, then get the right loft putter to begin with, for the greens that you play. (Maybe get two putters with different lofts.) Before you fight with me on the underlying basics, read Dave Pelz book, "Putt like the pros," because that’s where I get most of my putting physics. Cheers! Dave

I have one, but I grew six inches after i got it, so I don’t use it anymore. It was good, ball hardly ever bounced. Was a little harder from the fringe, and on lag. Is shaped like a tear drop, more now than ever, I saw a commercial for it this morning. brian
I`m only 5` 7" and I want to be 6`. Do you think it would work for me?
Stevie.

Can anybody give us a report on this item? Any time over spin is mentioned about putting I always think about Bobby Locke. He had overspin on his putts and dropped many a putt. I played yesterday with a fellow who had one, and I asked him what he thought. He said he liked it, as it reduced the "hop" on the ball you get with other putters. He had success with it during our round. I’m still inclined to believe its the puttee over the putter that makes for good work with the short stick. I’ve seen guys putt better than me with just about everything!
I believe whatshisname with the nifty long hair who shot a 61 at Cleveland last Thursday was using one. -joseph

It would be better if they received the name because they made you’re opponents cry. Can anybody give us a report on this item? pick up you head just a tad you will top the ball and it goes no where as of no there are only ( 1 ) person who still uses it and i think that is because he wont spend the money on anouther putter . many of golfers in the hh area tried them at first but now dont know of two people that still do except fot the guy at outr clup he is a 27 hdcp / my self a 8 . went back to my old bull eys .
