Feeding My Habit, Dept.

Question:

So are you going to bring the new stick to the course and practice with the old one or vice versa?  Or rotate them in and out of your shop/bag so they don’t get jealous of each other? Kidding aside, this seems very sensible to me.  I don’t practice putting at home that much, but even with the occasional times I’ve done it I’ve forgotten my putter at home once or twice.  Fortunately – this is to illustrate how pathetic I am – I keep a sunday bag with a couple of clubs in my car trunk 24/7.  Just in case of a golf emergency I guess.  There’s a putter in there, so I could use that if I forgot my putter in the den. Chris – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I set up my new putting range [very nice Christmas present] in my shop. My wife saw me putting away and casually mentioned that, "Wouldn’t be a good idea to have a putter out here all the time so practice would be easier?" [i.e., no running back & forth to garage to get & put back putter...]  So, I ordered components for a clone putter from Golfsmith and am in process of assembling it – epoxy yesterday, grip today.  {$30 vs. the new price and I’ll never worry about dashing to the course without my putter.}  My wife’s still a babe!   :-)

You didn’t read well enough. I’ll just copy here the bit that you missed. "The addition of a club or clubs must not unduly delay play (Rule 6-7) and must not be made by borrowing any club selected for play by any other person playing on the course."

Thanks Pat, I think you are quite correct. Rule 4-4 A does not exempt partners from the "any other person" category. After reading your post I first assumed that (since I played all 18 holes w/ the borrowed putter) I would receive the maximum penalty of 4 strokes.  On further review I suspect that I should have discontinued use of the putter after I "discovered" my error on the first hole. Penalty for breach: DQ. Seems any way you slice it you just can’t do this.  On the bright side, trying to putt w/ my 3 iron would most certainly have unduly delayed play. (Just for the sake of argument, if under rule 4-4 B, partners share clubs, wouldn’t that one set of  clubs be the one selected for play by each partner and thus not shareable? OK, maybe not.) If you think your action through logically you are suggesting that partners may have 28 clubs by borrowing one anothers, albeit not more than 14 each????

I guess I was thinking that  if each has 14 and then borrows one from his partner, he will then have 15. One in his hand and 14 in his bag, thus a breach.—Unless his partner borrows one at the same time, which I guess would be done. I can see the end result. One partner carries 8 woods and 6 wedges, the other carries all irons and rescue clubs, 2 putters and a momentus swing trainer. Thanks for the response. Bill

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I am glad this came up. Last season I went out for a round and halfway to the course a clear picture of my putter leaning up against the chair in my living room flashed into my head. I was very embarrassed, and totally put off my game for the day at that point. Not having an extra set with me, as you wisely did Chris, I considered buying one at the pro shop but decided that $150 for a putter I didn’t really like was too steep a price to pay for a stupid mistake. Since my playing partner is a good and old friend I asked him if I could use his putter during the round. We were playing 4 ball stroke play for skins. Here is my question. Rule 4.4 B says that partners may share clubs provided the total number of clubs carried by the partners so sharing does not exceed 14. My partner started with 14 clubs, I had 13. He never exceeded 14, neither did I, but the total number of clubs carried between us totaled 27. Is sharing one club the same as sharing all clubs? Everyone decided that no penalty would apply during this friendly round. I later concluded that my penalty was how poorly I putted using an unfamiliar putter. Any ideas on the correct ruling here?

I am far from being a rules expert but my understanding would be you were fine in that situation.  I believe if you had borrowed another club of his, you would have been in violation of the rule, since two clubs would put you over the 14 limit.  Similarly if your partner had borrowed one of your clubs, he would have violated the rule since he had 14 of his own.  That is my understanding FWIW… Jen – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – We were playing 4 ball stroke play for skins. So this means if I put a full-service driving range in my basement…. Having read your posts, I would suggest that you have one before suggesting that to others.   Incidentally, how long did you lurk here before posting, a day?   Put a clip of the post you’re answering in your post so the group won’t be scratching their heads wondering what the hell you’re talking about.
