clubmaking question-reshafting a putter

Question:

Superglue? Seriously. Once when I had a putter in the vise for regripping, I was going to twist the club a bit by turning the head. To my surprise, the head readily came loose – and I never knew it was loose beforehand – it seemed OK. Being out of shafting epoxy – and wanting to use the putter the next day – I simply reinstalled it using Superglue. I figured if it didn’t come loose with nothing more than friction holding it in place, a little Superglue should make it solid as a rock. It did. Let’s face it. There just isn’t a lot of stress on a putter’s shaft/head joint. Unless a tree gets in the way… — Joe Cartpath – www.joecartpath.com Basic Golf Clubmaking & Memphis Area Golf Course Guide

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – If I hold the head and grip of my putter and twist (discovered this while cleaning my grips) I hear a distinct ‘click’.  The shaft is actually slightly twisting in the head of the putter.  It’s maybe a 1/16th of an inch max, but I’m sure it will get worse with time. I’m getting a similar problem with my Crisman putter. The hickory shaft now has a slight movement in the hosel. It’s a little over 50 years old, so it isn’t surprising that it’s loose, but I’d like to find how to tighten it. — Eliyahu Rooff www.geocities.com/Area51/Underworld/8096/HomePage.htm RSG Rollcall http://u1.netgate.net/~kirby34/rsg/rooffe.htm

Response:

Heat the shaft near the hosel, while pulling the shaft out.  You will need to remove the old epoxy from the shaft and inside the hosel to allow the new epoxy to  form a good bond.  Small wire brushes or smallpiece of sandpaper on dowel will get into the hosel. If the grip is still on the shaft use the flat edge of the putter grip to help reallignment. Hope this helps.

Is it as simple as heating the area that the shaft is inserted into the head (hosel with a putter too?) with a plumbers torch, pulling the shaft, and applying new epoxy?  Can I reuse the old shaft or do I have to buy a new one?  Do I have to worry about the old epoxy in the hosel? While I’m at it I think I’m gonna buy one of the SnakeEyes MCS1 putter heads, a Royal Precision putter shaft, and a few of my favorite putter grips and build my first club.  Good/bad choice of clubs and components to start with?  Do I need to worry about the orientation of the shaft when I assemble?  I know I’ve read posts about spining/splining, but I’m guessing that this only applies to full swing clubs and not putters. I’ve always regripped my clubs myself and I’ve tackled a couple big plumbing projects so I think I have everything I need except for the single club packets of epoxy to do this.  Am I missing anything?

I was at the Golfsmith shop in Moorestown NJ yesterday, and I looked at the MCS1 head.  Very nice, indeed!  I’m planning on building one in a couple of weeks. BTW, I was NOT impressed with the staff that was working there.  I get a hell of a lot more info from RSG! Steve — –Anyone can play it from the fairway.
