Question:
I have a question about chipping wedges, are they illegal to use? I seem to be terrible when chipping around the greens, especially anything 20 yards or shorter. I recently obtained a chipping wedge from a friend and like it alot. I have another friend however that tells me the club is illegal to use.
Chippers with two striking faces are not a legal club. But why do you need a chipper? The chipper is the same loft as a 8 or 9 iron. Learn to use the iron with a putting stroke… and voila! it’s a chipper! — Digital forums are a gift to the slow witted
Response:
Many of the "chippers" have 2 faces and that makes them non-conforming. Only putters can have 2 faces. Another problems is that many of them come with a putter grip, which has a flat side. Grips are required to be round, except on a putter.
Interesting. Define "putter". (I am looking for whatever definition is used to exclude this chipper).
Response:
ROG, Appendix II, Design of Clubs – a putter has less than 10* of loft.

As long as it has only one face and a round grip it is likely to be a legal club. But to make sure you can go to http://www.usga.org/rules/index.html and check Rule 4 and Appendix II of the Rules of Golf.
I would never buy a chipper because I have too many clubs as it is, and I don’t know which club to displace. However, what distinguishes a chipper from a putter? Couldn’t you just call it a putter with a lot of loft? I know that putters do come in various degrees of loft…
Response:
If it is a two faced club, it is illegal because it is two faced not because it is used for chipping.

However, there might be some specific reason that particular chipping wedge is illegal, just like certain putters or drivers are illegal.
