Attn: All cross handed putters…questions..

Question:

Hi, well I have been experimenting with the left hand low putting style for two days and I’m really feeling uncomfortable with my hands joining together as one unit.  I’ll put my right hand fully on the club with a palm grip, then I’ve overlapped my left hand almost entirely over the right hand, almost like a double overlap grip.   I was just wondering some of the different grip styles that you might use. I tried to look at Fred Couples hand placement, as well as Jim Furyk, but couldn’t get a good close up.   One further note, I have noticed my putter path more on a direct line back and through. Thanks,                         John

I just switched this spring. The only thing I found comfortable was basically a 10 finger grip…

I use the basic reverse overlap grip, meaning my right forefinger overlaps my left pinky.   My right hand goes on the putter first, then I sort of slide my left hand in and my left pinky goes under my right forefinger. I’ve been putting crosshanded for seven years and it works for me. When I started, someone told me I’d be better off sticking with the standard grip for long lag putts, but that became too much of a problem; on long putts I would sometimes strike the ground before striking the ball.   So I soon went to crosshanded on all putts. In the 18 months after I started putting crosshanded, I went from a 16 handicap to a 12. (Now, five years later, I’m back up to a 16, but that’s because  I don’t play as much anymore.)                                    —Jim

I alternate between two different crosshanded grips.  The one I usually use is the 10-finger.  It’s almost like the grip that one of the PGA pros uses with his hands separated.  I just slide them together. Sometimes, if that isn’t feeling good, I will overlap my left pinky over  my right index finger — essentially a lefthanded Vardon grip. In either case, I put my right hand on the club first and try to keep it mostly in my fingers with the right thumb pretty much straight down the shaft.  When I wrap my left hand around I surround my right thumb — on the left side is the fat pad of my left palm (the extreme base of my left thumb near the "life-line" of my left palm) and on the right side is my left ring finger.  I concentrate on keeping the pressure constant on both sides of my right thumb with those two pressure points of my left hand. Try it :) — Barry Smith
