Question:
I have a set of Wilson Prestige Tour clubs. They were a $299 boxed set at Wal-Mart. Yes, I am a beginner!!! :+) I bought them last August. I went to the range today. I got to my 3 iron. I hit 2 balls fine. I got to the 3rd and the club head took off with the ball. It wasn’t a bad shot. I didn’t even leave much of a divot. Does anyone know Wilson’s return/warrenty policy. My wife threw away the box with that info. Also, if anyone knows who to contact I’d appreciate it. Thanks!!
Response:
I’ve no idea about their return policy, but what it sounds like is that the epoxy bond simply broke. It’s not a death knell for the set, simply a bad bond, eminently fixable. It’s not hard to re-epoxy a clubhead if you have some high-shear epoxy or can borrow some. In fact, you can buy little packets of epoxy from component suppliers that will do just a couple of clubs. They cost just a buck, as I recall, but the shipping/handling will no doubt bump you up to $5 give or take. So you have that as an option. If you are uncertain about doing it yourself, you could check and see if there’s a clubmaker near you. I imagine they’d reattach the clubhead for you for in the ‘prox $10 range. I checked into them and found that they weren’t Wilson’s clubs (really..) They are made in china and Wilson allows them to put thier name on them. (Doesn’t mean they are bad clubs, of course.. ) Good luck on warranty, China is a LONG boat ride.
Easy fix.. Walk the whole set minus box back into Walmart and say "Just got these a little while ago, this happened, I’ll take a new set and you can keep the box…" They’ll do it in a heartbeat. Nice thing about buying a set from wally world.
(Btw, I bought a driver there for 17.00 and LOVE IT, really hits great.)

I’m not sure thew "last August" part makes any difference. I thought of the epoxy idea. I just thought I’d see if I could get a whole new club instead. I guess I’ll just do that. Thanks!

Obviously the correct fastening of head to shaft was not done. It may be much easier to go to a local club repair shop and have them put the cub head back on shaft. This is done using epoxy and is rather easy to do.
Response:
By the way, if you choose to do it yourself, take some care to ensure that you have the grip (attached to the shaft, of course) properly aligned with the clubhead. On the infrequent occasions when I’ve had to do this (well, once or twice, anyway), once I have the head attached to the shaft, I very carefully lean it up against a wall and check with my eyes if the grip is aligned. Once it’s right, I don’t touch the club again for several hours (you should let it sit two, at least, but best is to let it sit overnite without touching it). This has GOT to be a Wilson thing… A year ago the head of my 3 iron went flying off–I was able to find it and the pro shop replaced the entire club. In April the same danged thing happened–only the head of the club went flying into a water hazard… couldn’t retrieve it. Now I’m stuck with no 3 iron… [insert major grumbling and not-so-nice language here]. Figures, it’s the club I use most…

Well, you mix up some hi-shear epoxy, you make sure the inside of the hosel is clean of any residual old epoxy, you make sure the shaft where it inserts in the hosel is also clean of old epoxy–in fact, you should probably use a little sandpaper to rough that part up again. Then you take a nail, dipping it in the mixed epoxy, and use it to coat the inside of the hosel with epoxy (not a lot–just enough to coat it), and then coat the outside of the shaft in epoxy as well–also not a lot, just enough to coat it. Then gently but firmly (sounds like raising kids, doesn’t it?) insert the shaft into the hosel, making sure it’s firmly seated. Probably there’s a ferrule, make sure it’s down on the hosel. Align the clubhead carefully with the grip, wipe off any epoxy that squeezed out of the top of the hosel (which it will), check alignment again, and then set the club somewhere that it can cure overnite without being disturbed and without the head shifting in relation to the grip. It’s actually as easy as it sounds. You’d think, given what high-value clubs cost these days, that there must be some secret process in gluing together a golf club. Well, there’s not. Mike Rather easy? How is it done then? Obviously the correct fastening of head to shaft was not done.
