Question:
I am evidently a masochist, because I went to Chad’s web page and looked around. Chad says he is a golf pro and is too good for lessons, but the LOWEST 9 hole score he has posted is 49. He also has an excuse for everything. The only 18 hole score he has posted is a 101. On another page he claims a 58 for 18 holes and 255 for 72 holes.
I wonder if he is unable to distinguish between actualy swinging the club and playing LinksLS or some other video game. I understand that this is a common occurance with young people these days, although I have never seen it in action. Jerome "I shot a 59" O’Neil

Sounds like an ego problem, "chad you are 30 over par that is not advanced". So whats his page address, I need to look at this stuff — "When Primitive man screamed and beat sticks on the ground we called him a Barbarian, When Modern man does the same we call him a golfer." – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -"I am an excellent putter, sand player, iron player, driver, trouble shot player. I’m good at everything! And another thing: I WILL NEVER TAKE LESSONS!!! Why? Because I’m too advanced for lessons." Then he includes some of his scorecards. His best 9 hole score was 49 and 18 holes was 101. Can you imagine if he wasn’t too advanced for lessons? You’d need a Pentium II, 300 MMX processor and team of accountants to calculate his scores.

Larry, I would have reposted, your post , but it was to long, so forgive me please. Yep, I see a "pro" every spring for three tune-up sessions. Helps alot, but most of the time, it takes a couple of months to show itself, in my game. In fact, most of the people I know, that work with a "pro" have the same experience. I am very surprised, to hear you say, that things turned around for you immediately. Now if you ever have a "pro" that just shows you pictures of Palmer or Hogan and says: Stand like this, or turn like that, or finish like he does. Runaway as fast as you can! <g
Hey Scott, were you the one doing the video reviews a while back?

One of the reasons why I think I noticed such an immediate improvement was that he gave me basic things to remember and repeat for each shot. For example I do not worry about bringing the club all the way to the top of what would be considered a full back swing but rather I bring it to a point just below shoulder level for lack of a better description. He tells me that as I get more time in and experiance that I will be able to bring my swing back further without screwing up the end result. Little tips like this make me play a good comfortable game for my current level and leave room for improvement as time goes on. <previous snipped for brevity The only reason I mention any of this is that there may be people much like myself that feel that lessons are a waste of money. Even though I still have a lot of learning to do, my advice for the beginner is to find a good pro and spend your money there first. I will definetly be meeting with my guy again as 1/2 hour with him has just saved me alot of frustration out on the course. Larry H.
Larry- I am a beginner also and probably should take a lesson but I won’t because of the following reasons: 1. I have a good swing and have made many a good shot so therefore it’s just a matter of duplicating the correct mechanics. 2. Between all the books I’ve read , all the pros I’ve watched all the "Golf Channel Academy" shows I’ve watched what else is there to learn ? 3. Why should I throw all this money into lessons, equipment, etc… just to take a few strokes off my game ? I’m never going to be a pro. Even if I become a scratch player, who cares ? 4. Even with the correct basics, I don’t have the time or money to *practice* what I’ve learned. 5. I believe golf is more a mental game than anything else, once you’ve got the basics down. 6. How do I know a lesson won’t mess me up more ? There are many pro’s out there whose swing mechanics would never make a textbook but are nevertheless successful. regards, JB.
Response:
Dear JB, I am an advocate of lessons because lessons helped my game. Good lessons are invaluable because (1) you can get immediate feedback on your attempts to improve and (2) there is another person watching and analysing your game and this second view can be invaluable in identifying and correcting faults. I have added some personal thoughts, which you might want to consider, to all of the points you raised. I am a beginner also and probably should take a lesson but I won’t because of the following reasons: 1. I have a good swing and have made many a good shot so therefore it’s just a matter of duplicating the correct mechanics.
Well you may have a good swing, but have you ever had your swing videoed? I thought I had a crap swing until I saw the video when I realised I looked pretty damn good. There were, however, two wee problems which I would have never figured out for myself. 2. Between all the books I’ve read , all the pros I’ve watched all the "Golf Channel Academy" shows I’ve watched what else is there to learn ?
Well now you know what they do, what do you do? There is always more to learn. 3. Why should I throw all this money into lessons, equipment, etc… just to take a few strokes off my game ? I’m never going to be a pro. Even if I become a scratch player, who cares ?
There is, of course no answer to this. The only reason to take lessons is to perform better at whatever level you are at. If you do not wish to do this then lessons would be a waste of money but you "have read all the books, watched all the pros and the "Golf Channel Academy" shows" so there seems to be a contradiction here. 4. Even with the correct basics, I don’t have the time or money to *practice* what I’ve learned.
Well if you do not practice you will not improve whether you take lessons or not. 5. I believe golf is more a mental game than anything else, once you’ve got the basics down.
I agree but getting the basics is quite a feat in itself. 6. How do I know a lesson won’t mess me up more ? There are many pro’s out there whose swing mechanics would never make a textbook but are nevertheless successful.
Well lessons will mess you up in the short term because you will start playing a differnt game (classically unlearning all your bad habits) but if you find a good teacher this rebuild phase will be short and relatively painless. regards, JB.

Why play a game that constantly frustrates you? First let me say I love golf. I don’t know why. I follow the pros; I enjoy their tournament competition. I love the fresh air and I especially enjoy the colors of golf: the green grass, the blue water set against a morning sky. But, I hardly ever play anymore for exactly the point raised in JB’s question. It’s totally frustrating. I play bogey golf (sorry, no handicap) and each round I usually hit four or five ‘good’ shots. And it’s actually these good shots that are the most frustrating. It’s so easy! LOL Further, the recent discussion of playing partners reminded me how much more enjoyable it is play as a foursome than a twosome or single. This being the case, it seems far easier to be sociable at the 19th and leave the first 18 to those with the burning desire to follow the little white spheroid wherever it may land. As I’ve always said, "The problem with golf is the ball always goes where I hit it." No aces yet, but teasingly two inches from the hole… Good golf, David

Crispin, Your points in favor of lessons are well taken. I have to admit that when I posted my comments I left out one very important reason in addition to the ones I listed: EGO !!! ( I can do this on my own and don’t need any help type thinking.) I was always a natural athlete and never had a problem with baseball or football. Yet golf has humbled me tremendously ! There just seems to be so many variables and it’s actually starting to annoy me ! Maybe it’s a deep seated belief that golf is really just for a select few and I’m just wasting my time. Why play a game that constantly frustrates you ? Regards, JB.

Well having been reasonable at a number of sports I must admit my first forays into the world of golf were experiences in humiliation and frustration. And now it is my opinion that golf is probably the hardest sport to play. However, those moments when things do go right (one or two per round in the begining) do seem to make up for the hassles and ego bashings. Crispin Roche
Response:
Starting a few months ago I took up the game of golf. I get out to play 18 holes 1 to 2 times per week. I have improved from a 120 player to a 95-100 player in that time. Most of that I owe to my brother, as he is a much better player than I and has shown me what I can approve on at times. Recently though I think I have been reading to many books and looking at to many web sites for advice. My game the last 3 weeks has suffered considerably back to the point of hitting 120’s or higher. I could not figure out what was going on. I tried everything from the old "clear your mind and think of nothing as you swing approach" to the opposite of think every part of the swing. So I break down and give a well respected local golf pro a call and set up a lesson. I always thought that I could learn the game on my own and that lessons where a wate of money. Well for less money than what I pay for a cart and 18, I spent just a 1/2 hour with the pro and 3 buckets later, he was able to change small things in my swing that had me hitting ball after ball like I have never hit it before. He made changes in my grip, my posture at address, and the takeaway of my club. By just focasing on these areas and making the needed changes, I felt like I was ready for the pros. The question then was- will I be able to do the same thing when I am out on the course without him around to guide me. Well the answer at least for now is a big YES. I went out today and hit my best game ever of 91. This is a course that I normally score around a 95-100 on good days. Should my score of fell more? I don’t know but all I can say is that my iron game was very strong for me and felf very comfortable. Now if I can get rid of my 3 putt problem I’ll be set. The only reason I mention any of this is that there may be people much like myself that feel that lessons are a waste of money.
