What clubs for an absolut beginner

Question:

I am a male, right hander and very tall(6 foot 3).  Can anyone recommend some good beginners clubs.  I have had some basic lessons with a 7 iron, but I think it was made for someone shorter than me.  I then hit some balls with an "oversize" club.  Should I use "oversize" clubs. Also using the oversize club I seemed bend my left thumb back too much when hitting the ball why? Thanks

One of the beautiful, scary things about golf is that there are few Absolute Truths in this sport, in part because there are few industry standards among manufacturers. Golf abounds with opinions and matters of personal preference. Having said that, my take is this: fit is critical. Although the idea is to expand the sweet spot, "oversize" is a matter of preference: I generally find oversized clubs clumsy-looking, like the sweet spot is lost in all the surface area, so I prefer mid-sized clubs, both irons and woods. Other things are more important, I’d suggest. Length and stiffness of the shaft, size of the grip, swingweight, lie angles, swingweight are just some of the most elementary considerations; you may need longer, stiffer shafts, oversized grips, upright lies. At your height, I’d speculate that you’re not likely to get a well-fitting set of clubs "off the rack." So getting fitted to your size, physique, and swing is critical (as it is for all of us), because if your clubs aren’t right for you, you won’t play as well as you might and then, frustrated and discouraged, you might quit the game. Think about going to a reputable local clubmaker for a "custom" set of off-brand clubs. You can often get a decent set of such clubs for much less than the big, brand names; get a sense of your game before you spend large sums to cover a manufacturer’s advertising. Another option, if available in your area, is a golf shop that sells used clubs that people may have traded in. But, like the custom builder, the shop should make sure that the clubs fit you. Whatever else you do, have fun every round. Regards, Roy Zipris
