Question:
I took up the game about two monts ago and I have a real bad problem with topping the ball. I lose half my strokes just getting to the green. I of course have the slicing problem but my main problem is topping the ball. Any ideas on how to eliminate this problem or at least reduce it significantly? Glenn
Response:
Glenn, You might want to make sure you are keeping your head and body down. Most likely the reason you are topping the ball is beacuse you are setting up, then while you swing back, you raise your head and body up a little. This will casuse you to be maybe a just a half an inch or so higher than you set up, thus causing you to top the ball. Try not to move anything but your arms and your hips. I know what it is like… I took the game up back in February full time, and I learned very quickly about how to prevent topping the ball, which was what I did all the time. Good luck. I hope that helps! — Thank you, Ryan Austin http://www.aoklahomagolfguide.com

You’re probably standing up in the middle of your swing. Glenn: It’s highly possible that you are placing the ball too far forward in your stance for your particular swing. Take you favorite club (for example, a 7 iron), and swing on the grass without a golf ball. Swing it enough times to start leaving a "consistent" divot so that you can see exactly where the bottom of your swing is happening. You’ll want to place the ball where the start of the divot is. This will allow the club to impact the ball just before it bottoms out, and should produce the best ball flight for your swing. Keep in mind that the location where you play the ball in your stance is going to change from club to club (generally more towards your forward foot as the clubs get longer). It may be a long process to get this "nailed", but it should pay big dividends! As Joel said, below, you must maintain your spine angle throughout the swing — usually the easiest way to try to attain this is to maintain your visual focus on the ball. Keep your head still, and your spine angle should remain fairly accurate, also. IMHO, this adage is responsible for more problems than any other single cause in the golf swing. Watch any golfer hunched over the ball, with poor rotation and no follow through, and you can bet they’re following the maxim "don’t lift your head". And the more they lower their head, the more it comes up when they swing. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – In the words of Lee Trevino "DONT LIFT YOUR HEAD!!!" the golfer replied but "How?", Lee responded "Read my lips, DONT LIFT YOUR HEAD" pretty simple huh 8^)

Check to see if your falling backwards after you swing. If you are you must transfer your weight forward on the downswing.
