Rifle Recommendations

Question:

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hey all – I think I’ve decided on Rifle shafts for my new(er) irons.  I’m not sure what shaft would be best for me though.  I don’t know my swing speed, but I and others that I’ve played with in the past tend to think I swing pretty hard. I am currently using stiff (S-90) bubble shaft Taylor made irons.  I hit a 9 iron about 150, and a 5 iron about 180ish.  I don’t hit the new irons that I got (Wilson FG-17 blades) quite as far, but I’m writing that off as the more "traditional" loft.  Especially in the higher lofted clubs.  They currently have TT Regular shafts, which are too soft for me. From what I’ve read and seen I’m planning on 6.0’s.  I’m really between 5.5 and 6.0, and I think 6.5 would be too much for me. Any suggestions? Eric

Not only do the FG-17’s have more loft, the steel shaft is shorter for a given club, probably by an inch for clubs of that vintage. I would be inclined to agree with Mike, both the recommendation of 5.5’s and the suggestion to try both the 5.5 and the 6.0. In my experience (and many other people’s) Rifle shafts tend to feel noticeably stiffer than True Temper shafts of the same frequency. According to the chart that Rifle uses to recommend which flex is best for a given swing speed and distance, I should be playing 6.5 shafts. However, the 6.5’s felt so stiff that they were almost unplayable. After trying the 5.5 and 6.0 I went with the 6.0. The 5.5’s actually felt better and were a little longer, but I was somewhat more accurate with the 6.0 and accuracy was more important to me than length. — Dan Driscoll Member USGA, NCGA RSG FAQ: http://ttsoft.com/thor/rsggolf.html RSG Roll Call http://rec-sport-golf.com/members/?rollcall=driscolld

My best suggestion would be get fit!  Frankly, I think you’re really splitting hairs, calling yourself between 5.5 and 6.0.

[Automatic dark side recruitment mechanism kicking on]:  If I had to guess, I’d suggest a 5.5.  However–HOWEVER–you seem quite willing to experiment a bit, so that’s what I’m going to suggest.  Why not take the uncertainty out of the equation, and get a couple of shafts, one a 5.5, one a 6.0, and try them both out?  You can usually get 5-irons, so get one of each and try ‘em out.  Yes, it’ll cost somewhat more, but the entertainment value of this, Eric, I think is quite significant.   Try ‘em both and let us know how it goes.
