Question regarding distances

Question:

Hi,      I have been playing for a few years and would like to get an idea of how far  the "average" person hits their various irons. I know their is no clear cut answer but I am looking for some sort of gauge. Also what is the normal spread between irons? Thanks, Bobby "Waitress, I need two more boat drinks" Hot Sauce, Cold Beer, Golf, DJing, Jimmy Buffett and All That……what a life ; ) http://www.pcompute.com/ra/redriver.htm     NO MILD!! Response:

I dunno, 150 yards for the 5 Iron and ten yards increments between irons, that would satisfy most week-end golfes, don’t you think?

playing golfis fun f i v e

Curtis, I don’t know if you can tell, but your messages in the newsgroup, as read by a standard news reader, are filled with dozens of lines of extraneous html coding–so a one-line message has 58 lines of junk & then your one sentence.  FYI, you might try to turn a switch someplace in your software. best regards/C – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – –WebTV-Mail-941540643-167 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; CHARSET=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7BIT I dunno, 150 yards for the 5 Iron and ten yards increments between irons, that would satisfy most week-end golfes, don’t you think? –WebTV-Mail-941540643-167 Content-Description: signature Content-Disposition: INLINE Content-Type: TEXT/HTML; CHARSET=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7BIT <html<body: background="http://members.tripod.com/~webtv22/starw.gif"<p<img src="http://www.dewa.com/animated/16.gif"<center<p<i<b<u<font color=colorgray<marquee scrollamount=383 scrolldelay=2000playing golf src="http://members.tripod.com/~webtv40/acat1.gif"//–<display: transition="slideleft"<!–<center<img src="http://members.tripod.com/~webtv8/babydance.gif"//–</html –WebTV-Mail-941540643-167–

Obvious question here, whats an "average" person (or rather golfer since we are talking golf)? I think of my clubs in terms of 10 – 15 yard ranges per club and usually hit a few 7-irons in the practice area / range before a round to see how I am hitting on the day. On a good day my 7-iron is 145-155 yards. Crispin Roche

Response:

The real question to be asked is "What club do I, not some "average person" or Tour Pro, need to make this shot?"  Club selection and course management are more essential to good scores than how far you can hit a specific club. If it is an ego issue, have the numbers changed on the clubs.   Just for the record, I used to hit my irons rather short( 5 iron – 150). Whenever I was asked what I had hit, I would tell them and then watch them fly the green. They eventually stopped asking me that question. I even had a guy I had never met before in my life tell me once that I was about to hit too much club. I promptly turned and looked him in the eye and asked him how far I usually hit that club. He said he had no idea, and I told him " That’s right, you don’t have any idea".     The best club to hit on any given shot is the club that will get the ball to the pin. If somebody wants to talk noise about your length, tell them they can do it every time they hit it closer than you do. B Terry

I am always amused when one player asks another what club they are using for a shot because nobody seems to apply the resulting 2 stroke penalty for asking advice. Crispin Roche

In casual play… big deal. Get a life?

Bad habits die hard! Of course 2 strokes is the official penalty.  Unofficially the repercussions could be much worse because what I hit is probaly not what my opponent / playing colleague needs to hit. Crispin Roche
