Question:
- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Golfsmith sent a head I had not ordered, charged for it and has not reacted when I have asked for them to return the money. Have many of you had such a problem and has Golfsmith done anything in the case? What to do? The order contained also a wedge head, whose weight was 11 grams over what I asked for and 7 grams over the specs in the catalog. They charged for picking also this head. Is this typical of Golfsmith? I was going to place an order with them, but, now I am wondering if maybe Golfworks is a better way to go. If this is an exception, that is one, that is one thing. I would expect that they should be able to get your order correct and have quality control over what they send you. Jim
I ordered over $3000 worth of components from Golfsmith last year and had very few problems. None that they didn’t take care of to my satisfaction. I have never had a problem with the quality of their clubheads.
Response:
I have been ordering from Golfsmith for about 4-5 years, and they are always fast to get my stuff, and all products have been good quality. Had a mistake with anorder once, but they corrected it promptly.
Response:
Just to add a data point, I much prefer their product line compared to Golfworks or Dynacraft from an aesthetics point of view. As far as being able to hit a particular club every golfer will be different. I am sure there are people who love the Sterlings. I was actually considering building a tester at one point. What was it you didn’t like about them? I’m curious.
I agree, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I liked the looks of the Sterling irons and built a set on the basis of looks and design characteristics related to progressive perimeter weighting. I built them using Rifle 5.5 shafts and tour velvet grips to a 5 iron length of 38" and about a D2 swing weight. I had a lot of mishits with them in the 5-8 iron range. I have played a lot of different clubs and these were long when hit well, but they were not easy for me to hit. Reasons don’t make any difference because if I can’t hit clubs well I’m done with them. I also wasn’t initially impressed with the Rifle 5.5 shaft. I bought some new iron heads at CSG golf out of Spokane and put the Rifle shafts in those and I absolutely love them. The are long and easy to hit, very solid. I even sold my Ping ISI coppers to play the CSG head with the Rifle shaft. I have had two different sets of ferrules I bought from Golfsmith that I didn’t think had good quality control. Golfsmith has lots of people working the phone lines that kind of BS their way through technical questions. Golfsmith has lots of products that may appeal to many different types of people but I have no idea how well they were tested. Peterson’s golfing did a test of the Penick irons and they were not well received at all. It fact very low rating. My opinion of Golfsmith is they are getting too big , too fast and that usually means too bad. I also agree that some of the heads in Golfworks and Dynacraft are really stupid looking but they may be functional. I get Golfsmiths clubmaking magazines and there is always some good information there that I can use. Golfsmith is kind of a Jekyll and Hyde to me. They do some really good things and also some real money grubbing boners. Personally I would like to see them have 1. Better consumer relations and quality control 2. A smaller and more consistent product line 3. Stick to their original purpose and do it extremely well Much more than my usual 2 cents. Tom

Golfsmith sent a head I had not ordered, charged for it and has not reacted when I have asked for them to return the money. Have many of you had such a problem and has Golfsmith done anything in the case? What to do? My order fax (thus a written order) contained an optional order for an SS235 head. I clearly expressed that I order the head ONLY IF they can pick a head whose loft is at most 10 degrees. They charged 2$ for picking the head, but despite of that its loft is 11 degrees! (I have measured many lofts etc., that the measurement surely is right.) I have faxed already twice asking them to return the money, but have received no response. (From here in Europe it is too expensive to phone.) The order contained also a wedge head, whose weight was 11 grams over what I asked for and 7 grams over the specs in the catalog. They charged for picking also this head. Regards, Anssi

My experience with Golfsmith has been great. They have always been helpful and friendly. They usually even call to see how you are doing several weeks after your order has been sent! BJC
Response:
Last year I returned some new heads & shafts (customer changed mind) as well as some defective tools to Golfsmith with no problems and I didn’t even need a return authorization number. I simply noted which invoice they were from and received a credit on my credit card. Paul

I have never had a problem with Golfsmith when sending products back or getting things resolved over the phone.

I think Golfsmith is suffering from explosive growth. (For instance, they’ve more than doubled their staff over the course of 1996.) Normally, that’s a nice problem for a company to have to solve. But it’s not that easy to solve; for instance, look at AOL. I encountered similar problems with Golfsmith over the past year and a half. I was hoping they’d get over it, but they have continued at the same (or higher) growth rate — and apparently still haven’t figured out how to handle it without letting quality suffer. I like their product line. I hope they solve their problems soon. Cheers! Dave

I agree with Ken. I have had problems with Golfsmith shipments but they have always come through whenever I had a problem. I think that if you called their customer support line and explained the problem, they would satisfy you.

I just got an fax from Golfsmith (4 weeks after my first fax, 3 in all). Golfsmith has now returned the money to my account. Thank you, Anssi

I don’t totally agree with Dave on their product line. I was really disappointed in their Sterling irons, I couldn’t hit them. My wife does like her Lady XPC woods, however. I bent some Rifle 5.5 shafts and called Golfsmith tech service and they were next to worthless. Since they couldn’t help, I asked for the telephone number of Precision FM Golf, the shaft manufacturer. They couldn’t( wouldn’t) give me the number. I called Golfworks and they gave me the number and Precision FM Golf took care of my problem. Golfsmith has a whole lot of hype in their claims. I think it’s just BS and ignore it, but I still don’t like it. I also think that with the exception of a few clubs, Golfsmith could do a much better job in the aesthetic aspect of club design. Their clubs seem cluttered with a bunch of stuff that I don’t want on there. UT golf has put more thought into how the clubs look and I appreciate that. Also Golfsmith has gotten much more aggressive in marketing by telephone and I’m not buying into that either. I generally will place orders to Golfsmith because they are closer to me and they have some items others don’t have in terms of shaft selection e.g. tapered tips and G-Loomis. Just MHO Best wishes – Tom

I also like their product line. I just ordered the iron head demo package with the Sterling as one of the heads. I’ll be trying out some 5 irons. As another data point, I placed two orders one with Golfsmith and one with Golfworks. I’ve already received the Golfworks order but I’m still waiting on Golfsmith. All I can say about Dynacraft’s catalog is that it’s glossy. The photo’s don’t show me enough of the aesthetics and It`s a pain to look up the price. Dennis
