Question:
#1 if you find an oversize grip you like, it is a lot easier and faster to t hrow those on and not mess with masking tape. however, using tape allows you to change and control the size of each grip if you would like to (ex. make driver grip larger than wedge or whatever) #2 golfworks (in columbus, ohio) gives all the info. golfsmith probably does also. #3 i use golfworks (also called maltbie co?) for all mine.
Response:
Golfsmith sells a vice jig "gripping station" to ensure club face is square. They also carry a device to measure grip size. In addition they sell all sizes and brands of grips as does Golfworks. Rob

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hello all I have decided to regrip my clubs, and go to an oversized because of my long fingers. I have several questions, and I hope these havent been dealt with too recently: 1) Should I buy oversized grips, or build up with masking tape and use reg. grips. Thoughts on each?? 2) Do most catalogues give grip specs? I was looking in the Sportek catalogue, and they gave no dimensions whatsoever about their grip lines (G. Pride, etc.). Why would some one buy something (e.g. midsize, oversize) without knowing what the hell the dimensions are?? 3) Would someone go out on a limb and recommend a mail order clubbuilders catalogue with good quality/good price in mind, especially for materials (not necessarily the best component company, but grips etc.) 4) Finally, is there a jig or something that someone can recommend which will ensure you have a square clubhead while in a vise? Thanks much for your input!! Ciao Mike — The Ohio State University Toba, where are you? Columbus OH 43210 "Morning is the long way home"
I personally use the Golf Pride Tour wrap Midsize grips. Of course I could get the same size grip with buildup tape but why bother, I like the tour wraps. However, if you want a certain size grip and don’t want to use tape your choice is somewhat limited. Here are the size specs for a few oversize grips (taken from the Golfsmith and Dynacraft catalogs). Golf Pride Tour Wrap Midsize 1/16" 0.6 core Tour Velvet Midsize 1/16" 0.6 core Jumbo Victory 1/8" 0.6 core Avon Duratrax Oversize 1/32" 0.6 core X-Air Jumbo 1/16" 0.6 core Jumbo Chamois 1/16" 0.6 core Mens Nexus Oversize 1/32" 0.6 core Kelmac Mens Oversize 1/32" 0.58 core Tacki Mac Mens Oversize 1/32" 0.58 core Mens Arthritic 1/8" 0.58 core Mens Jumbo Tour Pro 1/8" 0.6 core Hope this helps. Removing grips, and the tape under them — ESPECIALLY the tape under them — is one of my least favorite jobs as a golf club mechanic. It is worth it to me to buy the right grip, just to avoid having to remove layers of buildup tape when I regrip. 2) Do most catalogues give grip specs? Golfsmith is much better than most catalogues in this regard. For grips with non-standard diameters, they list the deviation from standard. They also list the weight of the grip. 3) Would someone go out on a limb and recommend a mail order clubbuilders catalogue with good quality/good price in mind, especially for materials (not necessarily the best component company, but grips etc.)
Golfsmith, GolfWorks, Dynacraft, and Hireko are excellent all-around suppliers. There are others with better prices, but more limited selection. (See the archives at dunkin.princeton.edu for comprehensive lists, with phone numbers.) 4) Finally, is there a jig or something that someone can recommend which will ensure you have a square clubhead while in a vise?
Yes, but you probably don’t want to spend the money for it unless you’re going into business. I use a bubble-level in the grooves of the clubface to align it in the vise; cheap, uses tools I have anyway, but not as quick as the jig. Good luck. Dave

Over sized grips tend to be ‘heavier’ than built up ones; but the built-up grip tends to be a bit ‘harder/firmer’, where as the over sized grip tends to be softer/more ‘cushy’, (for the same finished size…) 2) Do most catalogues give grip specs? I was looking in the Sportek catalogue, and they gave no dimensions …
Simple answer- Call the supplier, if they can’t give you the spec’s of the products they sell, find another supplier… Call the manufacturer – ask for the spec’ sheets for their product line… Why would some one buy something (e.g. midsize, oversize)
without knowing what the hell the dimensions are?? It happens all the time, it’s called comnsumerism… BTW – Victory Jumbo is +1/8; the GolfPride ‘Mid-Size’ is +1/16 3 layers of 2" wide build-up tape ~ +1/32 3) Would someone go out on a limb and recommend a mail order clubbuilders catalogue with good quality/good
If you stick with brand names, quality is usually not an issue. RE: Pricing for sets,(15 or so), most of the mail-order places are similarily priced. If your buying quantity, (cases), call the manufaturer. 4) Finally, is there a jig or something that someone can recommend which will ensure you have a square clubhead while in a vise?
The best thing that I’ve seen is a club holder that’s in all the catalogues. It has a cast ‘head holder’, and you ‘weave’ the shaft around the shaft clips and the club is snugly held in place by the slight tension on the shaft. Problem- COST – you need a left wood, left iron, right wood, right iron, and they’re about $50.00 a piece. — db miko Mac Shack Golf London, Ontario, CANADA

If you can buy grips that are the right size to start, that is easier than building up with tape. 2) Do most catalogues give grip specs? Try Golfworks Catalog – they explain it in detail and list specs. 3) Would someone go out on a limb and recommend a mail order clubbuilders catalogue with good quality/good price in mind, especially for materials (not necessarily the best component company, but grips etc.)
I use a Golf Pride Tour Wrap Midsize – 1/16" oversize. I have measured it against a Ping yellow line – same dimension 2" down from the butt. 4) Finally, is there a jig or something that someone can recommend which will ensure you have a square clubhead while in a vise?
Golfworks or Golfsmith have what you are looking for. Brian Millin
