My son the golfer

Question:

I bought my son a little plastic putter a few months ago (he’s 17 months now). Up until now, the club has mainly been used for poking the cat. Today, my wife was watching the Volvo PGA on the BBC and Joe starting watching for a bit. He then went out into his playroom and came back with his putter and started swinging it back and forth. My wife didn’t let him loose with a ball, so they practiced hitting a toy chicken around the room. I’m amazed that, at that age, he could see people playing golf on TV and link that with his own cat-poking device. I’d love him to play and enjoy and the game as much I do. Of course, if he plays, then I get to play more golf too :-)

Enjoy these precious years!  My little guy is already almost four. He’s got a little 7 iron that he hits quite well already.  He doesn’t care for much in the way of instruction but that goes with being 3 :) The funniest thing was one day he said look Daddy, I’m a Tiger in the Woods! Too much!  I really think he’s going to be good.  He already gets the club in a pretty nice position at the top – better than me I think and I’m not really kidding!   Enjoy your little golfer! Cheers, Steve

At age nine my youngest son started baseball swinging my spare clubs in the backyard. He started taking lessons with a PGA club pro about three years ago. Today, at age 14, he plays for the high school golf team and is on the state junior golf tournament circuit. Beats me on a regular basis. I started playing over 30 years ago with my dad who passed away in the 70’s. The best part of golf right now is having my son as a partner. Keep your son swinging. The best of golf is yet to come. aloha, jim – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -I bought my son a little plastic putter a few months ago (he’s 17 months now). I love it. My grandson is just 3 and has been knocking things around with his golf club for a year. I stopped encouraging him because I felt a little manipulative but he asks to "hit the ball" on his own now and it is one of his favorite things after watering the cat.

It’s amazing what they absorb.  My twenty month old practices his "golf swing"–hands clasped, swinging his hands from his right to his left and back again.  It’s really fun to watch.  Yesterday at the range, my 3 year old asked me, "Did I hit that like Til Mickleton?" (he has a problem with the S sound), after he hit a shot. — John
