Question:
I always thought their is no way they could justify the cost of Capital to the Crown shareholders and this is their way of trying to do so. Not for me.
I take it that from the reference to "Crown shareholders" that this extremely private club, was partially financed by taxpayers money???? David RSG Roll Call http://u1.netgate.net/~kirby34/rsg/sneddond.htm

..Aaaah!!!! Thanks for clearing that one up. Although it certainly sounds like something the Crown (Canadian Gvt) might try to get away with.

Lloyd Williams is actually trying to organise a major Pro tournament there at some stage. Not sure what the current status of that is. He actually wanted to have NO SPECTATORS for fear that they might damage the course by walking on it! What a load of garbage!!! If Augusta sees fit to have spectators, then I am sure the bloody Capital can. Cheers — -= Richard Apperly -= Melbourne, Australia
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I live close by and will never set foot on the place until Lloydy opens up the most under utilised piece of real estate in Melbourne next door, to the public. From the time the Capital was built it has been an under utilised extravagance that locks out Melbournes golfing public. Royal Melbourne, Metro, Vic etc all host pennant matches and charity days whilst Capital is open to Rex Hunt, Cricketers, the odd footballer, and about two high flying gamblers. The golf academy is a cynical way to part the golfing public from thir cash whilst offering nothing more than what is already available in the surrounding suburbs. I always thought their is no way they could justify the cost of Capital to the Crown shareholders and this is their way of trying to do so. Not
for me.

I always thought their is no way they could justify the cost of Capital to the Crown shareholders and this is their way of trying to do so. Not for me. dude, the place is private and by Lloydy that means PRIVATE! if u got the money and can build your own course then u can invite whoever u want to play it (even if it means putting an electrified fence around the whole complex). There’s an article in today’s Melbourne Age by Charles Happell about how he got invited past the huge iron gates, the peacocks and the swans gliding on the lakes to play a round at Capital. Apparently they spend A$3 million in maintenance per year, and the daily quota averages eight (yes, 8!) players. (Let’s see … that’s 2920 players per year at a maintenance cost of $1027 per player!) He reports Peter Thomson as saying "Capital is arguably Australia’s finest course, which makes it, in turn, one of the top courses in the world. It is almost too good. Tees, fairways and greens have a smoothness and quality that touches the incredible. It seems an act of wanton destruction to take a divot from the fairway or to march through a white bunker." Happell concludes by saying "it’s just a shame that no one gets to see it". There is a course near St Thomas, in SW Ont, …Redtail…which is much the same. Privately owned by two millionaires and they are the only members. Likes of Sean Connery etc are known to have played there, but you cannot even find directions to the place, and if you do, then you will not get past the gates unless you are expected. I imagine the played rounds per day is much the same as the Capital. David RSG Roll Call http://u1.netgate.net/~kirby34/rsg/sneddond.htm

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I went to this on the weekend and i have to say i was very impressed by what loyd has built. It has to be the best public driving range in all of australia. The greens and surround practice bunkers are excellent, driving range first class (pity they dont have any grass tee off areas) and the clubhouse/pro shop prices were fairly reasonable. I dont know if they charge for use of the putting green cos i just walked on and started playing but if they did it wouldn’t surprise me….just wish i live close by. anyone else seen it…your thoughts?
