Equipment help please

Question:

I’ve got no business giving advice to anyone that can hit a 195 yd 5 iron, but I will anyway.

his short game must really suck if he’s hitting it that long and only scoring upper 90’s e: woodsien(AT)bigfoot(DOT)com

Response:

My irons are steel R80 and my woods are graphite S90.  I believe the weight difference between the shaft types is throwing off my performance between my woods and irons.

I don’t think it’s that per se.  It still could be equipment related though. If I were you (and this is what I’ve done), I’d find a good clubfitter and have him analyze your current set.  There are lots of ways different clubs can be out of synch.  There’s no reason you can’t have graphite in your driver and steel in your irons.  Virtually all the best players in the world do this.  Get fit, and then put all your clubs to the correct specs, either by modifying them or getting new (or used) clubs.)

I actually saw a guy make an extremely tough 550 yard par5 in two last summer, only to 4-putt for bogey.  I’m not sure what he shot, but it must have been over 100.  300 yard drives and all.

Response:

Dan, i think it’s all going to your head. i’m in the same boat, heavy irons and lightweight driver with graphite shaft. if anything, when i use the driver on a new hole it’s a reminder to grip lightly and swing slow and low as i take the club back. so try not to think of the weight difference and concentrate on an even tempo on all clubs (putter excepted). ps. i also have an inbetween club – a Ping 1 iron with graphite shaft. goes nearly as far as my driver but with the feel of an iron. some days it’s my fav club! :) e: woodsien(AT)bigfoot(DOT)com

says… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -<snip I know I’m going to get the advise from a few to "see a pro", but for those of you who don’t mind providing me your .02 cents, do you think that the weight differences from the steel shafted irons with their heavier swing feel, vs. the lighter woods could be the root cause?  It seems to me since the shaft of the irons are heavier, the feel of the weight in the irons is more dispersed throughout the entire club. However, with the woods the head of the club feels heavier since the graphite shafts are lighter.  Shouldn’t I switch to all one type of shaft so the feel of the weight is consistent?  I do prefer the heavier weight of the steel shafts, but also like the stiffer feel of the S90 with my woods.  I understand the steel shafts will reduce distance but I am hoping that I am correct in believing that switching my graphite S90 woods to steel S90 is the right decision.  I’ve been playing for about 5 years, and get an average of 24 rounds a year.  I hit a 5-iron about 195 yards.  I bought my set without any pro advise off the internet about 2.5 years ago. Thank you for your kind input. Dan

I’ve got no business giving advice to anyone that can hit a 195 yd 5 iron, but I will anyway. I think you’re barking up the wrong tree.  I’m not saying your problem isn’t equipment related, but there are a whole pile of golfers in the world that use steel in their irons and graphite in their woods and do well with them.  In matching a set of clubs, shaft weight (as in lbs/in) is a factor, but nowhere near the top of the list. Since everyone else is going to tell you to go see a pro ( and you already know that’s going to happen), I’ll suggest that you go see a clubfitter and try some different woods. My irons are steel R80 and my woods are graphite S90.  I believe the weight difference between the shaft types is throwing off my performance between my woods and irons. I favor my irons because I use them more, natually.  Allot of times I find myself leaving my woods in the bag, because I just can hit them consistant.  On those days my iron play is consistent, but my scoring hurts from trying to reach the green with a longer approach shot. Other days I find my woods playing great off the tees and in the fairway, but I suffer from missing my mid and short iron approaches. I’m the type of guy on one outing who hits my tee shot 270y down the fairway most of the day.  But on the next outing I totally blast pulls, hooks and slices, so much that by the 9th hole I’m using a long iron off the tee.  Or, I’m dropping 9-irons right onto the green most of the day, or I’m missing it way left or right, duffing it short or overpowering it over the green.  The inconsistency from outing to outing caused me fits which didn’t help my score either.  I know if I can just solve this problem, I’ll be knocking 10 shot off my game, easy, plus elminating 2 or 3 penalties.  I’m hitting in the upper 90’s to low 100’s now.  I have progressed from getting totally frustrated on the course, to remaining calm and shrugging off my performance failures to just being glad to play and not being at work.  But its either success with the woods and failure with the irons, or vice versa, and never success with both. The trouble to me seems to lie with having my feel and timing "locked in" to the heavier irons on one day, or the lighter woods the next. My swing with the irons is stronger because they weigh more.  Hence, when I get one of my woods in my hands, the feel is quite different, lighter overall but with more weight at the clubhead.  It seems that I have two have a totally different swing tempo in order to hit the other. I know I’m going to get the advise from a few to "see a pro", but for those of you who don’t mind providing me your .02 cents, do you think that the weight differences from the steel shafted irons with their heavier swing feel, vs. the lighter woods could be the root cause?  It seems to me since the shaft of the irons are heavier, the feel of the weight in the irons is more dispersed throughout the entire club.
