Question:
Please define the two terms Chip and Pitch. I assume a pitch is just a partial swing intended to get the ball into the air and lan about 20 – 50 yards out I’m clueless as to what a chip is unless it’s when you use a 7 iron to get the ball rolling. Please help.
Close. A pitch is when the ball is hit with the hands just slightly ahead of the clubhead as you would hit a normal shot. The pitch shot hits the ball on a normal trajectory for the iron you are swinging. The chip shot is hit with the hands significantly in fron of the club head with the ball travelling on a much lower trajectory. It is intended to provide minimum air time and maximum roll.

A chip is a short low shot meant to get on the green quickly and run to the hole. It can be made with any club. I have used everything from a pitching wedge (moved back in my stance) to my three wood. Whatever club gets the ball over the fringe, on the green and rolls to the hole. A pitch is usually (but not always) a longer higher shot meant to stop quickly once on the green. Hence the term "pitch mark." I’ve never heard anyone say, "Fix your chip mark." My interpretations anyway. — ** Chris McNaught Centennial Golf Course ** ** Nampa, Idaho 83651 ** ** ** ** http://www.netnow.micron.net/~mcnaught ** ** ** ** GOLF PUTS A MAN’S CHARACTER ON THE ANVIL AND HIS ** ** RICHEST QUALITIES PATIENCE, POISE, RESTRAINT ** ** TO THE FLAME. **
