Are cast iron clubs "bendable?"

Question:

I have a set of TM Oversize Burner irons.  I think they are forged, but cast iron club head.  Are they bendable?  In other words, if I take it to a club maker, would he/she able to change the lie angles? Thank you. _Jung

Response:

They can be bent.  A couple of degrees for sure.  A competent club maker will be able to handle it.  On some castings, if the amount of bending is extreme (4-5 degrees),  there would probably be additional charges for removing the shafts, heating the hosels, adjusting the lofts and lies (with a mandrel in place), and glueing the shafts back in. — Ron Blanchard http://rec-sport-golf.com/members/?rollcall=blanchardr I took the RSG 2002 Pledge to not encourage trolls "Golfers are meant to suffer."  -  Ian MacCallister

No one can answer your question for you have presented an impossible situation. A "forge but cast iron" head doesn’t exist! Let me explain. Cast iron is a metal created from iron and carbon which is heated to a temperature when it melts. It is then poured into a cast (thus cast iron) with a predetermined shape and allowed to solidify. When cool it may be used for its purpose but it is extremely brittle and cannot be bent even when reheated. Forged steel is once again a metal created fom basic iron and a different percentage of carbon plus other components which when heated may be beaten into the required shape. Think of the old blacksmith forming his horses shoes. The two are not a single material but two separate items. Hope that helps. JPW

I am not an expert but, I am reasonably certain that your irons are cast of a steel alloy which is bendable enough to make typical adjustments in lie and loft.

A true cast club can be bent about 2 degrees without worry or sweat.   Forged clubs can be bent 180 degrees if you want it.  Anything else is probably in between. Dave

Response:

Cast clubs can be bent using lie/loft machines, but most club builders only will want to do a degree or two.  My understanding is that lie is a little easier to bend than loft with cast clubs, but don’t know for sure. For example, I had a Titleist 981 wedge I wanted to bend to match the lie of my pitching wedge and also bend it 5 degrees weaker than my pitching wedge. The club was really upright, so I was pulling everything badly.  The clubmaker had no problem with the lie bend, but could only bend it two degrees weaker in loft, which made it about 3.5 weaker than my pitching wedge. I believe cast clubs can be bent more than the minimal mentioned above if heated, but no one around here will do it.  One guy will bend cast if its a small adjustment with his lie/loft, another won’t touch them.  He says he’s had too many problems with breakage. If your fitter knows how to use intense heat and produce CHERRY red steel temperature, most any club can be bent: then immersed in cold water to "set" the bend. It will ruin a chrome finish, however. And the shaft needs to be "rereamed" because it will become a bit distorted by the bending bar during the bend. It does take someone with skill; I would not trust a newbie – usually they do not use enough heat. George Hibbard – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –
