17 deg. and 23 deg. small headed woods. What are they equivilent to?

Question:

I received a gift of 2 clubs, one 17 degrees and one 23 degrees.  These look like small-headed woods (shallow from front to back), I guess similar to a Taylormade rescue club.  Could someone give me an idea what woods/irons they are equivilent to?

Response:

It depends a bit on the shaft length.  Two clubs with, say, 23 degrees of loft might yield quite different average distances because of shaft length differences. The "iron equivalents" are, roughly 2 iron, 4 iron. The "fairway wood equivalents" are, roughly, 5 wood, 7 wood. If you put them in your bag, leave the 2&3 or 3&4 irons at home. [Because of the evolution of the longer clubs, I'm guessing that Jack Nicklaus was the last superb 1 iron player.]
