Question:
"Bill Vander Plaats" … – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – a friend suggested I take the grips off and replace them with smaller grips since the Winn’s might be reducing my hand/wrist action. He had tried "softie" grips himself, and after 1 week (of weak fades) he had switched back to Lamkin grips. I was skeptical, but for $9 for a pair of Golf Pride tour velvet grips, I gave it a try. Well, its been a week, and I can tell you that I am (so far) much straighter with these two clubs. Anyone else have similar experiences
Yes. All that. Hate the Winn grips. Too big. And the Softee grips are quite possibly the worst grips ever made. They’re too big and they’re too slippery. Might as well put a hundred wraps of single-sided masking tape around the grip and cover it with Vaseline. You made an excellent choice with the Tour Velvets. If you think they’re a teensy bit too big, you might wanna try the Tour Velvet Lite (that’s what I use). It’s ever so slightly smaller still. Randy
Response:
John’s comment regarding larger grip size reducing hand action is right on target. Larger grips slow hands through impact. Unfortunately, I have small hands and while the Winn grips feel great, they’re not well suited for me. Jim

I’m no golf expert (in fact, I’ve only been playing a couple of years) but this is my experience with Winn grips. IMHO, the Winn grips force me to relax my grip on the club. I think this is from the impression of tackiness I get from the grip- I don’t have to grip the club too hard and therefore my wrists are a lot looser which helps me release the club through impact. Quite the opposite from your findings, I’m afraid. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I’ve had Winn grips on my new irons and woods for some time, but made a change this past week with interesting results. Since I was having trouble shaking my fade/slice on the driver and 3-wood, a friend suggested I take the grips off and replace them with smaller grips since the Winn’s might be reducing my hand/wrist action. Anyone else have similar experiences with Winn or other grips?
Response:
In general, the larger the grip, the less wrist action you will get, so if the Winn grips were larger in diameter that your old ones, then I would expect your diagnosis to be correct. I use/love Winns and I have large hands, so I use the mid-size grips (a bit larger than normal) on my irons–my ball-striking improved noticably the first time I used them and it has stayed at that level since. At the same time, I experienced much of what you decsribed with my driver and 3W; weirdly, my 5W did not suffer at all. My solution: I removed the midsize grips from those two clubs and replaced them with standard size Winns. Problem solved. I have installed Winn grips, Lamkin, softies, chord, …. on my wife’s clubs. She makes a better release and has more consistent grip pressure, not grip/regrip with the Softies and anything like it. The feeling of tackiness gives her confidence that the club will not "fly away" and the softness and resultant lessening of grip pressure reduces shock which distracts her. I’ve tried the "softs" and the "chords" and remain with chords (for now) just because I’ve been used to them for 30 years. OTOH she is petite so maybe that has something to do with it. However, I do enjoy using her 5 wood with that sooooffffttttt grip. Hope this helps.
