Question:
I am interested in getting a titanium driver, but don’t feel like spending $200+ at this time. I have noticed a few wannabie drivers that are aluminum with a titanium insert. They seem quite light. Has anyone tried one of these clubs, or is anyone knowledgable to comment on this type of club. Is it worth considering buying one of these? All comments are appreciated. Bob

I had the same problem, until recently. I considered building a Golfsmith TI260 with lightweight graphite shaft (approx $150) but instead went in search of a more economic solution. The advantage of Titanium is that it is stronger than steel for the same weight and as such allows the construction of Bigger club heads. Most Titanium heads are 250 to 260 cc. I looked for other options including the Hugh Mungus (260 cc – TiAl alloy) but found it to be not what I wanted (didn’t feel solid like the GBB). I then tried a Mercury titan (250 cc steel) with Mach 22 shaft (72 grams) and fell in love. I am about to sell my Big Bertha. I never tried a titanium insert head, but would suspect it to be equally as solid feeling. The key is in the volume (250 to 260 cc for forgiveness), clubhead weight (195 grams if you want a 45 inch driver), shaft weight (lighter for 45 inch), shaft flex and torque (under 4.0 degrees prefereable) and swing weight (your preference but close to D2 to D4). Good Luck.

Well Bob I own a titanium insert driver and It does me good. But if you want the best then buy the best get the Great Big Bertha and forget it. Personnaly I would love to own a Great Big bertha but hell I can’t afford it. So if ya got the bucks go for the best but if you are on a limited cash flow then get he insert it works just fine. But if you want an extra 10-30 yards get the Big Bertha or the Burner Bubble or some other name brand. Sincerly, Anthony Auxter Mt. Shasta Golf Pro.

I had a Ti insert driver but didn’t feel it made that much difference. I went out, bit the bullet, and bought the Lynx Black Cat Ti driver-love it. It looks like a ‘57 chevy going thru the hitting area :^) Kind of a morale booster, and when I sliced, it wasn’t as bad. When I hit it sweet-OH BOY!!!!!! I outdrive most people I play with by about 30-40 yds. Scott Drager
