steel vs graphite shafts

Question:

Hi all; I’ve been lurking for some time now and figure it’s time to jump in. I have a question on graphite vs steel. What are the advantages or disadvantages of one over the other? I just switched from a set of Arnold Palmer graphite shaft irons to a set of Ram Fx Lasers in steel shaft. The rams feel more solid and seem more accurate than the graphite shafted irons. I have only played one round with them and been to the range twice. I did however break 100, shot a 96  for the first time last sunday. That is an accomplishment since i was shooting in the high 120s in May. Of course i have practiced and worked my but off all summer. I just wonder if the steel shafted irons are that much better than the graphites? They sure do feel great and I am gonn stay with them till I can afford a new set irons later next year I hope. thanks jeff argo

Response:

When I talk to customers about selecting a golf club and they tell me they are interested in graphite.  I ask them why they are interested in graphite ?  If they want something that is lighter and will help with their swing speed or they want something that dampens vibration on off center hits, choose graphite.  Where money is concerned and swing speed is not a problem, choose steel.  Go with a good quality graphite shaft in the driver where distance is more of a concern. I think of two things that help customers make up their mind on graphite vs. steel shafts: You want something that is lighter to help increase your swing speed ? Something that better absorbs the vibration on off center hits ? I think the technology continues to get better with graphite but I still prefer steel shafts for the consistency for each shaft that goes in your irons.  Take a look at Sensicore shafts.  Take advantage of any opportunity that you are given to hit both the steel and graphite versions of a club line. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – What is the theory behind picking a steel vs graphite shaft iron?  I am looking to buy some clubs and see that they are offered in both versions. This is where ping really shines.  Their steel cushin steel shafts are the best of both worlds.

I used steel-shafted irons the first three years I played and switched to graphite shafts earlier this year, Bobby. I think it’s primarily a matter of feel. Graphite shafts are a little more forgiving on the hands on mishit shots. They also may take a little more work to be as accurate as steel shafts, but I find I can hit them pretty straight. Having graphite shafts all through your bag also may help in developing tempo, since there’s less of a tendency to try to "muscle" a club and possibly overswing, they way you can do with steel shafts. The only time I’ve really missed steel shafts is trying to blast out of heavy rough. There the solidity of steel seems to be at least a mental plus, if not a physical one. — Don Porter Newspaper Reporter & Webmaster Web Page: http://www.datacruz.com/~dporter
