Question:
Driver, 3 wd and alternate between 3i & 7wd other than that 4i -PW, UW, SW and LW + putter I’d guess I really likethe 3i more than the 7wd unless I’m heading out to a place that has nasty rough. When I’m walking 18 on a hilly course or a hot day – I’ll usually pull the 3 iron to lighten the load.
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I’m guessing I don’t really need my 21′ 5wd. I’m going to try using a gap wedge for the firtst time because I keep getting caught between my SW and PW. The 95 to 105 is giving me trouble. 5wd was for 195 to 215 and that shot has not been giving me any trouble lately. What did you guys take out of your bag to put the 4th wedge in? Thanks

I have a gap between 175 and 195, but it’s pretty easy to lay off a bit. Like Pelz says, what difference does it make if I’m 20 feet or 35 feet from the hole from 185 yards?
Pelz is full of shit on this one, give me a 20 footer over a 35 footer anyday. But 20 feet vs. 10 feet from 105 yards makes a difference.
Agreed. tim

You mean electricity meters, volt meters, gas meters, water meters …? I think in metres.

I would suggest that you take out the longest iron. in my case that was a two because I only carry a driver and three wood. My three iron is good for 210 with accuracy. Any further than that and I would probably be better off laying up and using that fourth wedge. Wanna make more short putts? www.targetputting.com has the answer

Awesome feedback, made think quite alot about my game and where I play. You UK guys are a hot. Meters, Who thinks in Meters?
Thanks for the feedback, I’m only kidding. Kind of like the time I got Colin going after I trolled about the British Open always being played on a goat trail. I forget how many of you guys are on the group and how much fun it is getting a different perspective than here in USA. Here in TX we play mostly on Bermuda grass and it gets very long and stringy this time of year. If I miss a fairway, it’s happened occasionly, it’s often hard to get a fairway wood on the ball. The 3 iron would seem the better play (actually it’s usally no more than a 5 iron if the roughs that bad) I find the 3 iron a better trouble club for me too. I can slice or hook it out of trouble (like in the Pine trees) better than I can my 5 wd. I can usally keep the 3 iron trajectory lower than the 5 wd. Under branches as apposed to going through them. Thanks to all who posted.

Personally, I’ve had better luck carrying three wedges. PW (47*) GW (52*) & SW (58*). Thanks

When I play with 4 wedges, I leave a long iron or wood at home..usually the 4 iron. I use the 4 iron an average of less than once per round, and can easily choke down a bit on a 3 iron to emulate the distance. The real question is, how many clubs do you need in your bag to hit the ball more than 200 yds from the fairway? For most amateurs, the odds of hitting and holding the green beyond 180 yds are pretty slim…so how many clubs do you need in your bag for this low % shot? Most people have too many, and would be better off with a 4th wedge..

I’ve got a Golfsmith Quickstrike head sitting here with my name on it, the 22* model. When I get the time and inclination, I’m going to play it off against the 3-iron, and see if I get any additional value from it.
I wonder about the 18* model, too. Ulrich

I carry a driver, 4W, 3-PW, GW, SW, LW, putter. The only times I hit the 4W are on tight tees, or going for two on par 5’s, so I really don’t see a need for 2 fairway woods.

Putter. If you carry 4 different wedges, you better be good enough to chip everything in.

3-iron’s out. I carry Driver,3w,5w,4,5,6,7,8,9,PW,GW,SW,LW,P. I seem to hit the 5w more reliably than the 3-iron and I hate to give up the 3-wood, especially if I’m playing from the back tees. I normally carry: Driver – 3W – 5W 4 – 5 – 6 – 7 – 8 – 9 (44*) PW48 – GW52 – SW56 – LW60 Putter The same for me, except that I substitute a Mizuno 18 degree loft Fly High for the 5 wood. I can choke down on that club for 3-iron distance, if needed.
My 5-wood is the favourite club in my bag and the one I hit most consistently. I get around 190m out of it … if I grip down to the bottom of the grip I can control it to around 175m. I have contemplated dropping the 4-iron and replacing it with a 7-wood. If I could hit a 7-wood as consistently as my 5-wood, and around 170 metres, it would be very useful addition to my bag. My 5-iron is good for 160 or thereabouts. — Cheers Colin Wilson RSG Roll Call: http://rec-sport-golf.com/members/?rollcall=wilsonc Trentham Golf Club: http://www.trenthamgolf.com

I had the three bent to those angles (the LW was always 60*). The GW is actually a 48.5*PW bent 3.5* weaker. I’m not worried about the small bounce angle change. To differentiate the GW from the PW, I painted the number on the bottom yellow.
Hmmm…good idea. I may steal that idea from you someday (if the quality of my ball striking warrants it). Dave Clary/Corpus Christi, Tx Home: http://home.stx.rr.com/dclary RSG Roll Call http://www.rec-sport-golf.com/members/?rollcall=claryd

I guess the missing club, such as it is, is a 5-wood. I carry L-SW-GW-PW-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-P, a 3-W and a Driver. I’ve got a Golfsmith Quickstrike head sitting here with my name on it, the 22* model. By bag is: Cleveland 588 wedges 53*, 57* and 64* MacGregor 3-PW 1025CM TM R580 Driver and 5wd I opted to drop the 3wd out of my bag rather than the three iron or 5wd. My logic was based on the fact that I often went multiple rounds without using the 3 wood, but couldn’t say the same for my 3i or 5w. If a hole is too tight for my driver, I usually dropped down to my 5wd, or 3i or 4i, not the 3w. I hit my 5w between 225-235 pretty consistantly, and if I jump it can get it 240-245. I figured if I was much over that, the chances of hitting the green with the 3w, versus getting in trouble, were pretty low. Now, if I am not inside 245 out on a par 5, I don’t even consider going for it. Even on shorter distances their has to be minimal trouble if I miss left or right. On short or tight holes, including tight par 5’s, I will tee off with my 5w, 3i or 4i. As to the wedges, I use the 64* wedge much more often than I used the 3w, so I believe I made the right choice. — Billy www.alt-lasik-eyes.com (Home of the unofficial Alt.Lasik-Eyes FAQ)

That’s the same reason I put in a gap wedge. I found at my course that I had a lot of shots of about 90-100 metres in. I am hitting a PW 110 and a SW about 85. 5wd was for 195 to 215 and that shot has not been giving me any What did you guys take out of your bag to put the 4th wedge in? I normally carry: Driver – 3W – 5W 4 – 5 – 6 – 7 – 8 – 9 (44*) PW48 – GW52 – SW56 – LW60 Putter That’s 14 clubs. Sometimes I’ll leave out the LW and put in my 3-iron, but I can adjust the distance I get with my 5W by gripping down a bit to cover the distance my 3-iron will normally go. On a long course I might also swap the GW for a 3-iron, because those 90-100 metre shots in aren’t very common. — Cheers Colin Wilson RSG Roll Call: http://rec-sport-golf.com/members/?rollcall=wilsonc Trentham Golf Club: http://www.trenthamgolf.com
