Rifle shaft question

Question:

I’m thinking about buying a set of Taylor Made Burner (oversized) irons with either the steel Rifle shaft or M-70 graphite Bubble shaft. My 5 iron swing speed is about 68-70 mph. The Rifle shafted irons come in only R flex and S flex. Taylor Made says that the R flex is a Rifle 4.0.  But looking at my Golfsmith catalog, the Rifle 4.5 is already in the A flex area with a RSSR of 55-65 mph. The Rifle 4.0 isn’t even listed. I’m confused about the frequency numbers of these shafts. Could anyone explain? Regards, Petemoss **remove the number in my email address for my real address**

5.0 is equivilant to R rating.  6.0 to stiff.  Keep in mind that FM Precision uses a different method of measuring their frequencies than anyone else in the industry.  This is because they patented frequency matching.  Because of this different method, their shafts come out looking stiffer than others when you use other methods for frequency measurement.  I would follow the advise of the other posts and use the swing speed recommendations on the Precision website rather than Golfsmith. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I’m thinking about buying a set of Taylor Made Burner (oversized) irons with either the steel Rifle shaft or M-70 graphite Bubble shaft. Tom McKean (first U of I rsg post I’ve seen!) replied: I don’t think Golfsmith is always accurate in their ratings. Rifle shafts play pretty stiff. I have used a 5.0 and it’s Dynamic Golf equivalent is the S300. Believe Taylor Made. I have a friend who is a 2 handicap and plays with Taylor Made R flex and he hits a 4 iron about 200+ yards.  Best wishes – Tom I just switched to Rifles last year and love them.  I have a 5 iron speed of about 85 and went with the 5.5.  Doesn’t feel too stiff to me and I actually gained about a club to a club and a half in distance with my irons last year.  Use to hit my 5 iron about 160-165–now it’s about 175-180. I have always heard that the 6.5 Rifle was equivalent to the Dynamic Gold S300. I would think that a 4.0 would be quite flexible and would equate more to a senior flex ("A") frequency.  Maybe a 4.5 would be more appropriate for a 70 mph 5 iron swing speed? I have a hard time believing that Taylor Made has a 4.0 in their "regular" flex Rifle shafts.  It should be at least a 5.0, I would think. The numbers in the Rifle shafts correspond to the last two digits of frequency of a 43" (standard driver length) steel shaft.  For instance, the 7.0 has a frequency of 270 cpm (cycles per minute) at 43".  The 5.5 has a frequency of 255 cpm at 43" and is less stiff, hence the lower frequency. Take a look at my clubmakers website….he deals exclusively with Precision brand (maker of the Rifle model) shafts.  Give him a call with any questions you might have. He knows his stuff. http://www.precisionfit.com/ Hope this helps! Scott D. This is probably a better place to figure out frequency http://www.precisionfit.com/index.html

My 5 iron’s around 95 and I have Rifle 7.0.  Rifle shafts feel stiff and "dull" until you get used to them.  But I wouldn’t suggest Petemoss go beyond 5.0.  4.0 might work fine, especially if Petemoss tends to fade his shots. When I was playing Big Bertha R flex graphite I could belt a 4 iron 220-240.  Not always straight.  I’ve settled into 200-210 off the tee with the 4 iron now, swinging a lot easier.  But to be that consistent with such whippy shafts your friend must have a very long, smooth swing.         -joseph
