Question:
I have made about eight woods using wood turnings I bought from Golfsmith. I have made the horizontal face bulge according to Ralph Maltby’s Golf Club Desigh, Fitting, Alteration and Repair book. I have never observed anything to indicate I did it correct or wrong. Last month I assembled my first driver with a metal head: Jetstream and Aldila BD800. Last week I hit a drive off center towards the toe of the head and the ball flight had a slight push/draw movement which reminded me of the diagrams you see explaining gear effect. This was the first time I was aware of this type of ball movement on off center hits. Is "gear effect" something that you can observe or feel? Do you ever know what it is when you push/draw or pull/fade a shot when you have hit off center? Thanks Gordon Olson Manassas, VA

I have experienced this before but it is not something that I strive to achieve. A push or a pull are gremlins I fight all the time. I started to notice this when I started using oversized metal woods. But that still doesn’t explain it because I have done it with irons as well. Regards Trevor Critch
