Prepping for Match Play at RSG-Atlanta (long)

Question:

I spent a lot of time with the putter tonite and I believe I have figured it out.  I will, of course, spend more time with it tomorrow, and I’ll see if that’s the case or not. Mike

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I played a match in our season-long tourney yesterday.  I had to give 5 strokes to my opponent. After 7 holes I was 4 down.  I missed two short putts on 4 and 5 which cost me halves, lost two more on par 5s where he got a stroke. The missed putts had the positive benefit of helping me find a flaw in my putting.  I’m trying out a new KZG putter, the CNC-milled one with the 1 millimeter face.  I like it a lot, but it’s so much lighter-feeling than my Pegg-III that I need to be careful how I hold it.  Turns out on the misses I was gripping too hard; once I solved that problem the putts dropped again. So, I’m 4 down.  Time for a little Rotella treatment.  I tell myself, "Self, this guy has a higher handicap than you do for a reason.  Let it emerge, just play your game." So I do.  I get one back on the 8th, where he three-putts to my 2-putt par.  I get another back on the 10th, same thing–another three-putt for him.  I get another back on the 11th, where I have to sink a sliding 4-foot downhill putt for par (he’s already down with bogey). Now I’m 1-down.  We halve the next hole (the 12th), then I put my drive into the rough on 13; couldn’t get out to the green, end up with a double.  He pars, I’m down 2 again. The 14th hole is another where he gets a stroke.  I bomb a drive cutting off part of the dogleg; he hits it to the right side of the dog.  Tops his second shot, screws up his third.  I play a smooth 6-iron to a spot 100 yards out.  Meanwhile, he keeps trying to get it all back at once, ends up with a pickup to my par (just missed the birdie putt). On the 15th, I hit a 4-iron uphill into the wind about 15 feet from the hole.  Again, I can’t sink the putt, but it’s a par and he bogeys. EVEN! Par 3 sixteenth hole.  I put it on in the middle of the green, he hits it left down a bank.  I miss another birdie putt but tap in; he chips up short and can’t sink the par putt.  1-UP! At this point, my opponent is whipped.  He’s second guessing his putting, and he’s pretty much given up.  All I need to do is halve the next two holes, or win one, and I’ve come back from pretty far down. The 17th is a 90-degree dogleg, par 4.  I hit the best drive of the day past the dogleg perfectly in the fairway, 90 yards out.  He’s pushed his shot into the right rough, leaving a longish shot.  He hits his second, can’t get a good clubhead on the ball, pushes it right of the green into the rough. I hit my second about 12 feet away. At this point, he says he might as well concede the match.   I tell him "You never know what can happen."  He hits a short pitch/chip to about 15 feet.  He’s lying 3, I’m lying two.  Then he sinks the putt!  My birdie putt slides by again, and we’ve halved the hole. I’m 1-up going into the 18th.  He gets his last stroke here.  I do the only dumb thing I did all day, and overswing on the driver trying to compensate for the stroke he gets.  I hit it short and left, he hits it longer and right, but in an ok spot.  I get a bad lie, can’t get it out, advance it only 50 yards.  Third shot is greenside, but because I need to make the hero shot to tie the hole, I try to sink it, and end up with 2 putts for a six.  He gets a four, so we’re tied after 18. We start over on #1.  He goes first, pulling his drive big-time left, but so far left he actually has a shot to the green, albeit blind.  I pull out a 3-iron and smooth one into the fairway about 120 out. He hits his second shot first, just a guess-and-by-golly shot since he cannot see the green through the trees.  He dithers on club selection, finally grabs one without conviction.  He then proceeds to hit the most remarkable recovery of the day, to about 10 feet from the pin. Then I hit.  Ball just leaks right, into the trap greenside.  He’s 10 feet away, which even *he* can 2-putt.  I’ve got a longish bunker shot from wet sand, and I’ve got to get up-and-down from there. I then hit *my* best shot of the day, a wonderful bunker shot that flew halfway to the hole then checked, ending up 4 feet away. He putts first, misses just to the right, taps-in for par.  I now have a testy 4-footer for the halve, which I roll right in. Par 3 number two, uphill 184 yards.  He hits a wonderful 5-wood just on the fringe (the pin is up).  I overcook my 5-wood, it slides off the fairway just to the right of the green. He’s got an almost sure 2-putt; I have to get up and down from a bad spot. Turns out I can’t.  I get the ball on the green, below the hole, but about 10 feet away.  He goes first, leaves himself a 3-footer uphill. He marks. I then stalk my putt.  I smooth it right up the hill, but it slides by left (again!), and he makes his 3-footer for the win. All in all, good prep for this weekend, even if I did come out on the short end.  I didn’t let being down by 4 holes take me out of my game. I know what it feels like when my opponent makes an unlikely shot to halve a hole, and know that what I need to do is just play my game. Mike PS:  I really like the new putter, though I can’t seem to drop a long putt with it.  I’m all over the hole, distance is just fine, but they won’t drop from more than 8 feet.  I am hoping it’s just something that will average out later.  Like this weekend.  :) Mike Dalecki      I do not patronize spammers.  Help keep RSG clean! You didn’t need to go to the trouble.  Any TBI memeber would’ve gladly pointed them out to you. I then stalk my putt.  I smooth it right up the hill, but it slides by left (again!), and he makes his 3-footer for the win. All in all, good prep for this weekend

You have to practice losing? PS:  I really like the new putter, though I can’t seem to drop a long putt with it.  I’m all over the hole, distance is just fine, but they won’t drop from more than 8 feet.
