Please help me with a new driver.

Question:

Are there any inexpensive oversized titanium drivers out there? I am looking something that is similiar to the great big bertha, (doesn’t have to be so big) but I don’t want to pay that much. Shurly some company makes some pretty decent knockoffs. Anyone?

I use a Nickent 11 degree GH Plus titanium, that only cost me $140 at Edwin Watts.  I really love it.  Here’s a web site: http://www.nickentgolf.com/wood_titanium.html The Power Draw weighting system really helps me to hit it straighter. The ProForce gold shafts are rated for your swing speed as well. -Greg in MA

Response:

I use a King Power with a Harrison shaft.  But several of my old companions have bought and love the T-Rex from MasterGrip.  Also several bought the Hippo from Academy sports for 69.00 and love it more than their Taylor Made. Whatever you decide try some different shafts out from your friends or at a driving range.  Shaft is 20 times more important than clubhead.

get a taylor made 360 (12%) out there for a song (180.00 – golf smith)

Response:

You need to go to someone who does launch angle testing. I had it done last week and discovered my shaft was wrong. I was able to put a new shaft/grip on my old driver head and am now hitting a drive 225 – 230. Before my drives were in the 205 -215 range. After doing a lot of reading etc it seems that launch angel is the "key" but it must be tested in a proper manner and not a lot of places do it. I live in MB and there is at least one place tha does it. It is now great fun to watch my drive go over a trap that I used to hit into all the time. Our course is currently wet and just got areirated – am lookig forward to hard fast dry fairways.

Response:

Go to Walmart.  They have a 450cc Dunlop that’s more mallet than driver. CJB

If you dont’ want to go custom made, which isn’t a bad idea btw, Dunlop makes a LoCo huge driver for about $150, Tommy Armour makes a big head driver that is soon to hit the closeout bins. Then there is the Adams 363 driver on eBay which will run you about $90 or so.

Response:

Alot of people are really liking the new Dunlop Loco driver (450cc) it’s made from aluminum and comes with a great Harrison  shaft.  I think they sell for around $99.  Other than that it’s easy to get a good deal on last year (or even last two years) models

You  also might want to consider consider steel, unless you just HAVE to have either titanium or a 300+ cc head (or both). An excellent and often overlooked driver is the Taylor Made 200 Steel series. It actually has a 275cc head, which is pretty good sized and about as big as I can stand. It’s available with both graphite and Rifle steel shafts. They can be had pretty cheap, even brand new ones, because they didn’t sell like the big titanium drivers did. There are generally a lot of listings for the 200 driver on eBay, about 20 graphite shafts to 1 steel. You can’t do much better for the money in a factory produced driver. Check out the Ham ‘n’ Egg review at http://www.hamegg.com/main/article.php?sid=380&mode=threaded&order=0 I have one of these in the graphite shaft and absolutely love it. Some of my strong hitting buddies can outdo me for distance with their TM 320’s, but I’m not that far behind, and I’m in the fairway! I had a tendency to spray drives with the larger heads – no more! I’m now looking for a steel shafted version of the same club to try (don’t really like graphite, but that’s what they had in the shop at the time). I’ve also got the 200 3 & 5 wood in steel shafts and can understand why these are popular with Tour players. Very easy to swing, they hit the ball a mile, and they are deadly accurate.

Response:

One of the better, more widely used titanium drivers is the Integra 400. You can buy the driver, shaft and grip for $75-$80 assembled at Diamond Tour Golf and it is as good or better than most of the $200-$400 drivers out there. Don D.

A follow-up.  Diamond Tour sales the Integra VS88II driver which looks like a GBB.   Don’t know if it performs the same. I concur with Peter’s recommendation.   I didn’t have an oversized head made, but I had a 320 cc Titanium head with UST Proforce 65 shaft and golf pride grip assembled, spine aligned, and delivered to my doorstep for just under $100.  And I love it!  It looks just like a Taylormade 320.   Also had some fairwoods made by them that I am hitting quite nicely. Response:

Perhaps the leader of the CHEAP component driver heads if the TF360. Runs in the $30-40 range for the head and can often be bought used for the same price with a nice shaft. Moving up to the $90 price range, I am a real big fan of the SMT Golf heads. Particularly the 300cc Carnoustie, the 370cc Nemesis and the 455cc 455 Deep Bore. One thing you might consider… buying an Great Big Bertha in the $75-100 range.  The driver is still a solid alternative that plays very long with the proper shaft. Only down side I see, the head produces alot of back spin by today’s "low spin" standards. Another OEM driver that should be on your short list in the $125-150 range for a nice used condition… and it’s the Titleist 975J.  I recently picked up a 8.5* 975J with a stiff EI-70 for $125 shipped, and the stick is awesome. It kicked the Nemesis out of my bag by offering similar distance, better workability and has that Titleist drive feel. Good luck with your search. Response:

There are a ton of good suggestions here, but let me add one more.  If your pride won’t get in the way, buy a used driver.  You can get a Great Big Bertha for a very decent price used.  I have a great set of Taylor Made irons, a Cleveland 588 wedge, and a Taylor Made SuperSteel driver that I could never have afforded if I had to buy new.  Besides, you won’t feel nearly as bad when you put a sky mark on it, and you can claim that the previous owner did it…  :-) CJB

Why not assemble a driver yourself? Check out Dynacraft Dynafire and a pick a nice shaft from Grafalloy, UST or Aldila. Shouldn’t cost you more than 110 bucks or so. Fun and easy. Check out http://www.golfclubreview.com/dynacraft_flame.htm and http://www.dynacraftgolf.com/clubbuilder/index.cfm br / Christer, Stockhplm

Or have a clubmaker in your area make you one – it will be half the cost and have the correct specs that fit your swing!!
