Need info: Bulge/Roll

Question:

Newsgroups: rec.sport.golf Dear Sir, Face bulge is the radius from heel to toe on wood or metal woods.  The face roll is the radius from the crown to the sole.  Both are measured in inches of radius.  Face roll is mainly cosmetic.  Face bulge helps to spin a ball back toward the center of the fairway on heel or toe hits.  The first number in 10"X10" is the bulge, the second is the roll.   — Jeff Jackson |Dynacraft Golf http://www.dynacraftgolf.com Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Mime-Version: 1.0 NNTP-Posting-Host: dialup-108.nextek.net Organization: Dynacraft Golf Products, Inc.

I believe the cosmetic means the final product less than it could and should be. I measured some, and found the loft was 10 degrees, but only in the middle of the face.  If you hit the ball a half inch above, or below that middle of the club, your driver is transformed to perhaps 11.5 or 8.5 degrees. The very good golfer hits the ball right every time.  A hacker like me cannot do that, so we get a very unsatisfactory result with our driver. My solution is to buy ONLY those heads with a bigger number for the roll. Golfsmith have several.  I haven’t bought any from Dynacraft because they do not publish the numbers in their catalog.  I phoned, and got the information last year, but the models were not in their catalog, or at least I couldn’t find them. My favorite has an 18 inch roll, almost flat.  Any half decent hit will produce the trajectory and distance I want.   Colin

Newsgroups: rec.sport.golf Can someone explain what these mean in a driver, and what are the effects? Some are 11"/11", some are 12"/16", etc. Thanks in advance.

The faces of woods, unlike irons, have convex curves. Bulge is the curve in the horizontal plane. Roll is the curve in the vertical plane. The numbers are radii of the curves; the smaller the number, the more sharply curved the face. The effect of bulge is to neutralize the "gear effect" that one gets with woods (but not with most irons).  See my Club Design Notes for more on gear effect. I don’t know the effect or purpose of roll. Cheers! Dave NNTP-Posting-Host: 135.25.111.* Organization: AT&T – Lincroft, NJ USA
