Question:
Since shooting my age is not an option for a few years (at least not for 18 holes anyway), I’ve decided that I’m going to start tracking the earliest date of the year when I shoot the temperature. My goal is to get it done by the middle of March. The way the weatherman has been cooperating lately, with any luck at all, I might get it done before the end of February.
I almost shot my age today, my birthday. Beats eating haggis and raw fish (a standard birthday meal (that Mrs. Frostback does not know about!) when you are born on Jan 25th). I couldn’t manage my age on the front, and shot a 44. I was on target on the back, but went over and shot a 47. I wish that I had really hit the ball badly, but the big thing was the greens haven’t been mown for a while because the course is so soft. They said it was stimping about 1, but IMHO, it was more like 11". The little tufts of grass were an interesting variable that you don’t see to often. They can really deflect a ball! Monday the temperature is supposed to be in the high 70’s. I can do that. I think I’ll have to arrange to get the opportunity! I hope they find someone who can mow greens. I have never shot the temperature. But then almost all of my golfing has been in Colorado, and the only time I got my age (50) in 9 holes was in late November. So my next goal will be to shoot twice my age – and this looks like a fun subsequent goal.
Response:
I didn’t realize it got that hot in Atlanta until July or August.

RSG-ATLANTA 2002 – www.YouGoGolf.com/rsga.org Golf on the web – www.YouGoGolf.com Today I played golf in 80 degree weather, partly cloudy, very bright blue sky. Maybe a 2 club wind, sorta wimpy, definately not up to Lethbridge, Alta. standards. More like west Texas. I hit the ball really well. There is a definate difference in carry between 50 degrees and 80 degrees ambient temperature. I could not putt, however, and wound up with 35 putts and no birdies after sticking 7 approach shots inside 10 feet. I hit 2 long drives. One 280 and one 260 with no roll (it was very soggy out there today). Had a good feel for the torso loosening up and moving more smoothly through the downswing, and lost a lot of the feeling that the torso was restricting my downswing. I wished that the range was open so I could work on developing that feel; hitting the ball with my stomach! So I shoot an 85. Ah well, I could in some forlorn place where the wind is howling and the snow is blowing and the salt is oxidizing my car into dust. Been there. Done that. Neverwannadoitagain! Tuesday morning I left home at 6:55 for a 7:15 teetime, and it was 38F at my house. Closer to 34/5 at the course. All the fairways and greens on the front nine had frost on them. Advantage was that for the first time this winter, the fairways were firm. Because they were frozen! Today was a different story. Got up to the course at 10am, and it was already in the high 60’s. Lovely day for golf. So I did. Where do you live, Peter?
I live at the top of the Oakland Hills, about 15 minutes away from my course, which is Tilden Park GC, just at the top of the Berkeley Hills up behind UC Berkeley. It is still very spongy in spots, partly due to the insane amount of rain we’ve had, and partly due to kinks to be ironed out or fixed up or something in our just-installed drainage system. But what the heck? It’s playable. I expect that the fairways are going to be extremely soft, since the fields where I take my dog for walks are that way. I am just looking forward to swinging a club. The last time that I did so was a couple of days before X-mas and it was a balmy 27F, or so.
27F is balmy? My gosh, man, so are you! :-)) – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I was really nervous about hitting the driver (Taylore Made Supersteel, S90 Bubble Shaft), since I was not sure if I could damage it in such cold weather. I only hit about 15 balls, and then went inside for something warm to drink

Well, on Monday, we hat the warmest day in Mannheim, Germany since Dec 3. The mercury climbed to a whoping 38F! It is warming up, though, and they have forecast low 50’s for the weekend. The tee-time is already set for 10:00 on Sunday, and I can’t wait! Of course, it is supposed to rain, but ia could give a rat’s patootie
Why did I ever leave Florida!? Rob
