How do you guys practice?

Question:

But I’ve started practicing a "practice" round in my head.  I play two 9 hole courses regularly, so I know the course layout intimately.  I know what to hit on each hole, and I know within a club of what my approach shots usually will be.  This helps me in many ways:

I guess you don’t need provisionals.  Either you decide the ball is out of bounds, or you decide it’s in bounds. But this leads me to a question: How do I learn to hit the ball out of the crap?  I don’t have a place to practice that and a big reason I haven’t broken 100 is that I am very poor at it.  My biggest error is hitting the ball almost straight away from me – with the tall grass apparently twisting my blade.

Response:

Weekday evenings full swing work.  It varies but usually goes like this: about 30-40 balls with sand wedge start short, then full, then short shots again. Then from there it’s either 9-8-7-or 6 iron for a lot.  Then driver for at least 20 balls. Then a few 3-4 irons and 3 wood.  Then back to wedge for just a few short pitches/chips.  Then roll a few putts. A couple times a week I’ll try to hit about 250 plus putts. Saturday or Sunday, short game work for about 2-3 hours includes putting chips and pitches. As long as you know what you are doing right or wrong, then you can improve. tim – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I am starting this thread hoping to get some new ideas for interesting practice sessions. What I’m doing now at the practice facility is this: I usually start by hitting one of my wedges to a particular target, then continue target practice with every other club in the bag up to the driver, for about 10 balls each.  I do the same setup for each shot and usually take one to two practice swings between shots.  Sometime I will take the camcorder and a tripod if I’m trying to correct something, so I can see my swing. Next I go to the practice green and chip about 10 balls at a time from different lies and distances around the green trying to leave each one a gimmie putt. Next I line up about 5 or 6 balls starting about 3 feet from the cup and placed at about 3 foot increments.  I try to hole the first couple, then lag the others to gimmie range. Next I place several balls in a 6 foot circle around the hole and try to hole each one.  I do the same thing with a 12 foot circle, then I pack up and go home.  This usually take about an hour and a half. Does anyone have any good routines? Regards, Mark

Oh… No joke…  I have totally quit watching the Golf Channel Instructional crap.  That will completely screw up your game. When I’m at the range, the only thing I work on is hitting to targets and dialing in my range.  I’ve only got 2 thoughts on every swing:  Relax and fling the clubhead. Something I did today that was pretty fun.  I only had time for 9 holes, and the course was fairly empty because it had been raining most of the day.  I hit my first ball off the tee, and it wasn’t what I wanted, so I hit another.  I walked up to the first ball and took a nice swing and dropped that sucker right on the green.  I walked up to the second ball and took another nice swing and dropped that one on the green too. I ended up playing both balls out for the nine holes.  I even kept score with both.  Maxfli Revolution and a Maxfli Distance 90. I shot a 42 with the Revolution and a 44 with the Distance 90.  I WILL BREAK 80 SOON!!!!!!  It is my obsession.

Hey, it works for Sergio…

Yeah, and the whole time you’re out practicing your routine, the Mrs. is feverishly practicing her "short putting" with the mailman.

I do most of my practice with a 5I… looking for direction, trajectory, ball flight and distance. I will also practice some with the driver and a wedge. Hitting a few balls with each club is the test to see how well the practice is doing. One good way to do this is to get alot of range balls (mine are unlimited). The goal is to hit each club until you hit the number on the club of good shots. So one good shot with a driver, 3 with 3w, 10 with wedges, 9 with 9I, etc. The shot doesn’t have to be perfect… just playable. For woods, in the fairway counts, for irons… on/very near the green counts. To keep score… see how many balls it takes for you to go through your set… the fewer the better. It’s best to do this after warming up. We have a nice place to practice little chips, pitches and lobs and I go there once in a while too. I practice putting as necessary. Next I go to the practice green and chip about 10 balls at a time from different lies and distances around the green trying to leave each one a gimmie putt. I have two practice types:  One if I’m working on a particular problem, I use a 5I.  Easy enough to hit, but hard enough in the fact that you can tell when you’re off.  I replace the grip on my 5I 4x the amount I do on the other clubs. But I’ve started practicing a "practice" round in my head.  I play two 9 hole courses regularly, so I know the course layout intimately.  I know what to hit on each hole, and I know within a club of what my approach shots usually will be.  This helps me in many ways: 1. Course management, as you think of each shot and what you might have into the green and how you might play it. 2. Tempo.  I see so many people at the range who are like a machine gun.  Hit 90 balls in 30 minutes.   Well, you don’t hit 90 balls during a round of golf (not counting putts), and it takes usually over 4 hours to do it.  So playing the game in my head requires me to change clubs after each shot. 3.  This is related to #2.  Since I’m changing clubs after each shot, it reminds me to follow my routine of lining up the shot, and setting up properly.  Just getting into the correct mindset as if each shot really counted. 4.  I’ve found it to be much more fun than just getting up and whacking a bunch of balls. 5.  It’s easier on the body.  Probably because it takes longer to practice and you get more rest between shots. Swing Momentus at home most days.  Go to course.  Go to first tee.   Stretch for 30 seconds maximum.  Bombs away. Wayne — Roll Call:  http://rec-sport-golf.com/members/?rollcall=huffordw
