How do I "warm up"?

Question:

That muscle, whatever it’s called, is one that many adults taking up the sport have one or two encounters with. I recommend you continue to practice, gently, at a reduced level, so long as it doesn’t yield any sharp pain.  Dull aches, whatever, so long as they aren’t enough to make you flinch during your swing, you should be OK.  Continuing to practice will help you build strength and flexibility.  The most important thing, as others have said, is while you are developing your "golf muscles," or as you get older and creakier, don’t make any sudden, jerky, and/or violent motions before you are fully warmed up. If you experience sharp or debilitating pain more than once or twice, it’s time to see a doctor.         -joseph I an a novice golfer who has been taking weekly lessons since January of this year. Up until last week I was hitting 100-200 balls per day in preparation for my first round of golf in May. Disaster struck last Saturday when I pulled a muscle behind my left shoulder. I do not believe I am warming up and stretching the proper muscles before my driving range sessions.

No idea what club you are starting out hitting, but please _do not_ use the driver or anything longer than a smooth 7 iron to start out with.  I personally try to hit (after I stretch out a bit using a club around my back, etc) a dozen balls with my PW and then progress from there up.   Aaron Eppert

Don’t hate me for this, but there’s a book called _Stretching for Dummies_ that has a *really good* section on warmup stretches for golfers. —   "There are no silly golf questions – only silly golf CLOTHES."

Most golf books have a set of warmup ideas in but FWIW I try to: Rotate head 5 times each way to loosen up Stand with arms stretched at shoulder height, bend sideways to touch each leg 5 times Hold club across chest and assume swing position. Slowly rotate to point either end of club to mid stance position 5 times. Touch toes 5 times Finally hold driver at each end and hold as high as possible to generally stretch up. Hold each foot in turn and pull up to back for 5 seconds. That’s the minimum. Then do a few practive shots with toes together to get feeling of balance (7 iron good here) Build up power of swing till happy then try a few with the driver. THEN start the round. (Of course I normally turn up too late for that, take a couple of swings and crack on with it. But I’m not very good). Col
