Question:
I want to learn how to assemble clubs and I was wondering if Golfsmith classes are any good. If so, should I start with Basic Golf Club Assembly or Complete Clubmakers Training? I have no experience what so ever with club assembly.
Response:
I took their basic class ($30, I believe). It was a three or four hour session in the back of the store, taught by a couple of the salesmen who were clubmakers. It was not really in depth, but it was a nice introduction. I really can’t think of any information presented in class that was not explained somewhere in the Golfsmith catalog, but the big benefit of taking this class was in getting familiar with the processes and procedures of assembly, actually making a five iron and a driver, and learning the basics of fitting for length, grip size, and flex. It was not an intensive class, but for me stimulated my interest, showed me that it wasn’t all that difficult to do, and caused me to do a lot of outside reading and experimentation on club fitting and clubmaking. It’s become a very enjoyable hobby. Take the $30 in-store class. You’ll enjoy it, and if you really get bitten and NEED to become a professional clubmaker, you can always take the school later. Beware, though. Clubmaking is a little addictive, and you may want to start looking for homes for all the clubs you are going to make! Response:
if you intend to open a clubmaking business the golfsmith schools are probably a great investment. if you only want to make clubs as a hobby the expense in my opinion is overkill. basically the head is held on the shaft with epoxy and the grip with tape. not brain surgery. i think all the info you need is in the golfsmith catalog. i’ve made and repaired clubs for about three years. each year i regrip the clubs. this year i’m trying new shafts. it’s a lot of fun and inexpensive entertainment compared to what you’d spend at a shop. *** Posted from RemarQ – http://www.remarq.com – Discussions Start Here ™ ***
