Fairway Woods from the Tee

Question:

QUESTION:  I had a normal 3 wood that I used to tee off with.  I have replaced it w/ my new strong wood 3 although it is a fairway wood.  Is it ok to use to tee off w/?  Should I still carry my old 3 wood?  I am not ready to handle a real driver yet.

Absolutely, Dave. I also have a strong 3-wood that I use quite frequently off the tee. I gett better distance with it than my regular 3-wood and it’s considerably more accurate than my driver. It comes in very handy on narrow fairways or holes with small landing areas. I would continue to carry my regular 3-wood as well if I were you. I’ve found that it’s difficult for me to play the strong 3-wood off anything but a great lie in the fairway. And you can hit your regular 3-wood out of shorter rough. I don’t think I’d want to try that with a strong 3-wood.

Response:

I have never been able to hit a regular 3 wood well, but I got a strong 3 and a 5 wood and love teeing off with them. I can hit the 5 well from the turf also. The strong 3 I only use off the tee. Tee it up VERY low and you will be fine. YOu get a much more solid feel with a shallow face club then you do with one of those giant 200-300cc heads IMHO. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – SCENARIO:  I am fairly new to golf, and I just purchased a new Strong 3 and regular 5 wood.  They are the new low profile woods (like Adam’s Tight Lies). I tee off with everything in my bag, including the sand wedge on those 90 yard par three’s. I suppose I could forgo the tee, but I don’t see much point to that…

Response:

Hell I tee off with a 4 iron most of the time and out drive most of the hackers I play with. (well teeing off is kind of a misnomer because I hit off the ground. — Forget about World Peace…Visualize using your turn signal. Response:

Its fine to tee off with, just be sure that you tee it low, because if its a compact head like the TL it is very shallow.

Response:

Using a 3 wood to tee off with is probably a very smart move for most 18+ handicappers or beginners w/o handicaps. A 3 wood is much easier to hit than almost any driver and most high handicappers hit their 3 woods longer and definitley straighter) than their drivers anyway. If you don’t have another club to replace the driver with there is no reason you can’t carry 2 3-woods. If you want to play by the rules, make sure you are only carrying 14 clubs, maximum. I know one guy who carries 2 putter. He can’t putt with either of them (IMO), but it makes him feel better, so who am I to argue? Practice teeing off with both clubs and see which one you like better from the tee. It may be that you hit the ball better with your TL clone than with your ‘regular’ 3-wood. If that is the case I would take the ‘regular’ 3-woods out just to avoid confusion. That would also free up a space for a 3rd wedge or even a 2nd putter :-) .
