Question:
My ball flight with my driver is very high. I seem to hit it the same height that friends get with there 3 or 5 wood. My drives average about 240 yards but i feel i could probably get another 20 yards if i could lower my trajectory. My driver is 10 degrees loft. I know i have a more upright swing than most golfers because i’m 6-7. Would i be better off trying maybe an 8 degree driver or do i have something in my swing causing me to hit the ball so high?
Response:
That is usually caused by chopping down on the ball. Try this drill, plug a tee in the ground and make full swings at the tee, clipping the tee. This is the correct motion to hitting a wood off the tee. (HarveyPenick – LittleRedBook). Also, you mnay be tee-ing the ball too low. Half the ball should be above the wood when the wood is at rest next to the ball. That is how you determine the correct height to tee the ball. A suggestion: Do not takeaway the club from the ground, instead hover it behind the ball at address. It helps make the backswing fluid. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -My ball flight with my driver is very high. I seem to hit it the same height that friends get with there 3 or 5 wood. Or do like Greg Norman and gently lower the clubhead into place behind the ball and then swing. — Don Porter Newspaper Reporter & Webmaster Web Page: http://www.datacruz.com/~dporter

I think because you are 6-7, you have a naturally powerful and fast swing……That means that you need a stiffer shaft, as a shaft that is too whippy for you will cause a ball that starts low then balloons straight up in the air…..causing a significant loss of distance….

<<My ball flight with my driver is very high. I seem to hit it the same height that friends get with there 3 or 5 wood. I’ll go with the obvious. Take a lesson. Have a Golf Professional that is also a trained club fitter look at your equipment as well as your swing. The problem may be with the shaft of your club (too much flex, or too short), the type and compression of ball you are using, your ball position, how high the ball is teed up, or other considerations. With one lesson you may get a good fix on the nature of your problem and the solution.
