Question:
Is a double faced chipper (i.e. one that can be hit either right or left handed) considered 2 clubs of the 14 allowed? Someone told me once that it was, but I haven’t seen anything in the rule book about it. — Bay
Response:
Bay, A two faced chipper is illegal. See rule 4-1d. below: "Clubhead The distance from the heel to the toe of the clubhead shall be greater than the distance from the face to the back. The clubhead shall be generally plain in shape. The clubhead shall have only one striking face, except that a putter may have two such faces if their characteristics are the same, and they are opposite each other." Response:
A double faced chipper is illegal, period. Only putters with 10* or less of loft may have 2 faces and even then they have to be the same on both faces. Most chippers have the approximate loft of a 7 iron, say about 36*. Go to http://www.usga.org/rules/rule/index.html and read Appendix II for complete information on the requirements for club design. Doesn’t this rule make some putters illegal? I have seen many putters where the clubhead is longer from front to back, than from heel to toe. Mostly this is seen in the really long handle putters. David

Beats me. I understand what you’re saying. I looked and couldn’t find an exception to the rule specifically for putters. Maybe someone has some ideas on this. The right rule, but the wrong part of it, was quoted below. The pertinent part of Rule 4.1.d says, "The clubhead shall have only one striking face, except that a putter may have two such faces if their characteristics are the same, and they are opposite each other." Therefore, two faced chippers are illegal; two faced putters are not. By the way, before you ask, a putter is, under Rule 4-1, "… a club with a loft not exceeding ten degrees designed primarily for use on the putting green." – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Bay, A two faced chipper is illegal. Its illegal. Secondly, it is nothing more than a funny looking 5 or 6 iron as far as face angles go. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Bay, A two faced chipper is illegal. Folks, I want to thank you all for your advice. Last week I walk in a sporting store and I bought a double faced chipping wedge, because such wedge is not available in the stores where I am usually go for my golf procurements. The salesman at that new store didnt say a dawn word about the rules for double side chipper. So your advice come just before the legal limit to cancel a sale. I return the driver to the store and the salesman told me that he sell 150 double face chipper each year… He ask me in what kind of league that I am playing. This guy have lost a customer for ever, because I do not whant to loose my golf reputation for a stupid chipper. In the city where I live, the high end golf store do not carry double face chipper, because they follow the rules. So my next purchase will be done in thoses stores, because they have respect for their customers.
