Club selection?

Question:

I agree the only way I can hit my sandwedge around the green is to lock my wrists and take my hands out of the equation. I have learned to love this shot. Mark

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – This business of sand wedges hit off tight fairway lies brings up a whole new discussion: I maintain that in order to hit that shot successfully, one needs a SW with 7 degrees or less bounce. Most of the SWs that come with matched sets(that I’ve noticed anyway)are strictly for plowing through sand, as they seem to have a WHOLE LOT of bounce and are useless for little cut shots around the green, no matter how far you open the face. I’m off twelve and carry : Driver 3 wood 5 wood 3-9 iron pitching wedge sand wedge 56* (different make from other irons) lob wedge 64* putter Wondering if there’s a general consensus among golf addicts on which 14 clubs should be in the bag.  I’m torn on both sides right now.  Having trouble choosing between my 2i and 5w.  I’d rather hit the 2i on the tee box from a perfect lie, but would rather have the 5w off the fairway or from a decent lie in the rough.  Also struggling with my wedge selection this year. Thinking of giving up my 56 sand wedge and buying a 60 this year.  My sand wedge is, without question, the least used club in my bag.  After bouncing a few into the ball off of firm fairways I just don’t feel confident with it in my hands anymore off the turf.  I even found myself hitting my 52 out of the sand quite a bit last year.   How many people out there have all 3 wedges in the bag and which club did those who don’t leave out? Anyone else feel the same about a traditional sand wedge and have a 56 with less bounce as a compromise?

Driver, 3W, 5W (well, 18 deg Jackaroo) 4-PW 52, 56, 60 W Putter.

Response:

I’ve split the difference in my wedges with a 48* PW, a 53* Gap/Sand (8* bounce) and a 58* Sand/Lob (0* bounce). Neither the 53* or 58* are true "sand" wedges, but both work pretty well out of the sand for me depending on the situation. No choice for me with the 2i vs. 5w … I can’t hit the 2i at all so it’s a 5w for me. Response:

Hobbsey, Always a tough call, I used to have the 5w vs. 2I debate before every round. After two seasons or more of screwing myself up before every round, the 2I won out because I was more accurate with it. Okay it was tougher to hit out of the rough, but from the semi, fairway or tee it was unbeatable when the woods were problematic. I’m not sure about you, but I have typically been a better ball striker with the irons than with the woods. That’s been a few years ago and I now play irons with a little smaller head. I discovered a seven wood a couple of years ago and now sometimes debate the 7w vs. the 3I. :-) !!! The clubs change but the problems remain the same, don’t they? Other than that I carry driver, 3w, 3 thru 9I, PW (47*), UW (52*), SW (56*), LW (60*) and putter. Other than the 60* copper Cleveland wedge, all of the irons are Ping i3’s. Four wedges is a little odd, but it works for me with a 4* difference though the series from UW to the LW.  I have found the 120 yd and under clubs do much more to improve my scoring than the 200 yard plus clubs as compared to the 3I and 7W. So the difference between what club wins iron vs. wood game is overall very minimal, at least for my game at this time. On the wedge side of things, I’ve found that the biggest secret to SW and LW both is to not put yourself at the disadvantage of really needing to hit either of them "full strength". While some monsters out there rip the SW’s 120 yds plus, distance off of them can be very erratic with big, full powerful swings. Better efforts can be made for the controlled approach with the 3/4 and half shots. The control gained with the less than full shots with the wedges can help on additional shots with most of the shorter irons in the bag, too. I guess if I had to give up a wedge it would probably be the SW as the UW works fine for longer bunker shots and the 60* can fill in on the closer ones. I just would want  togive up the advantage of the easy soft flips and lobs on all of those greens I miss! Alot of  my playing partners hasve wedge lofts that are all over the map. Most adjust for loft and bounce by tweaking their own personal technique. Good luck with your decisions. The nice thing is that if you go the wrong way, as long as you hold onto the equipment, you can always reload and try it again. Regards, Ed

Although I have PW, AW, SW and LW, I leave the 60* LW out of the bag and use the SW (with lots of bounce) in a lot of situations — sand and around the green.  I use the PW for most pitches from the fringe. The LW is wonderful when I hit it right — 10% of the time.  Strongest iron is a 4I.  Carry D, 3W, 5W, 7W.  I would carry 18 clubs if legal.
