Changing natural swing planes

Question:

Newsgroups: rec.sport.golf – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I am a huge slicer of the ball with my driver and a bit with my 3 and 5 woods. In huge I mean that I have to aim well into the trees on the left to land on the right side of the fairway.  I am pretty sure that I know my problem. I did have the ball too far forward in my stance and now that I have brought it back to almost the middle, my slice has settled down a bit but not enough. My main problem though (I think) is that I have an outside-inside swing plane and I would like HEAPS of advice on how to compensate for my swing plane with grip, stance.etc or how to easily and effectively change my natural swing plane to inside-inside. I can only hit my sliced drives about 180 metres but have hit a straight one once or twice and have got at least 240 metres carry. I know that this slice is cutting my distance dramatically. I am 15yo, 60kg, small build, and 5′11". I am not very strong but hit my (unsliced) irons and fairway woods a good distance. HELP PLEASE!!! Aaron Peachey. Victoria, Horsham, Australia.

Aaron,         When you practice on the range, place something (tee, ball, cup) directly behind the ball you are going to hit, along the target line. Then just swing without hitting that object.  If you swing outside-in, you will hit whatever is there.  Swing from the inside, you’ll miss the object, hit the ball, and probably hit a draw. Good luck. — **      Chris McNaught          Centennial Golf Course    ** **                              Nampa, Idaho  83651       **     **                                                        ** **      http://www.netnow.micron.net/~mcnaught                  ** **                                                        ** **      GOLF PUTS A MAN’S CHARACTER ON THE ANVIL AND HIS  ** **      RICHEST QUALITIES PATIENCE, POISE, RESTRAINT      ** **      TO THE FLAME.                                     ** Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Mime-Version: 1.0 NNTP-Posting-Host: cnam022p13.nam.micron.net Organization: Micron Internet Services

Aaron, This has worked for me (knock on wood) :) . Concentrate on taking the head back the 1st 6" from the ball on your target line. This does 1) forces at least half of your swing to be aligned with your target and 2) puts your head into the host instead of worrying about … the water, the trees, the distance, the wind, etc etc etc I hope it helps.  Every good golf shot starts with a good grip. You could be grasping the club with a srtong grip style. That means your right hand is too far under the grip and your left hand is too far over the top of the grip. There is a new video being sold on the web called "The Grip". If you learn and master "The Grip" it will cure your slice. Also your setup may not be correct. Here is a lesson you can try. when you setup to your target line, waggle your club and at the same time standup straight and turn your head toward the target. If your chin doesn’t come close to your shoulder then your facing to the left of your target. This will cause you to bring the club in the same direction that your shoulders are facing, but the face of the club will still be faciing straight to the target. This keeps the face of the club open causing a slice. Sandy Lane www.grip-itgolf.com

You’re right about your swing plane. Well, when I find myself slicing off the tee, I find that my swing plane has gotten too steep. So when I do this, I am not rotating my shoulders around, and instead, am merely shifting horizontally,  which to me, means that by the time I strike the ball, the club face hasn’t squared. So the adjustment I make is to make my backswing shallower and that usually takes care of the shoulder turn. It really helped last week on the course, especially after I had seemd to lose my swing on one hole. Then again, it’s only taken me, what, 20 years to discover this revelation :-) Good luck, ICF

Aaron, I believe if you bring your club back TO THE OUTSIDE this will cause you to loop at the top and will result in the clubhead coming through straighter on the downswing, if not causing a inside-out effect(draw).  Hope this helps, it does for me.   If it does work, you owe me a beer.
