Question:
I was in a "Play it Again Sports" the other day.. a chain of second hand sporting goods.. Anyway I noticed they had a couple of King Cobra drivers,, used. I just this season got a set of Cobra irons.. I really like them .. so I’m looking at this driver and I’m thinking why not? It’s $99.00 .. I’m still playing with the stell shaft driver from my first set… It works but it was one of those from a KAMRT or whatever .. nothing fancy. The Cobras are both graphite regular flex .. one is 10.5 with thier stablizer .. that fin kind of deal the other is 9.5 and offset. My q to you guys that have bought clubs is what to look for? I mean they are both scratched up a little not real bad and the grips look in good shape .. maybe better (less worn) on one thenthe other … but is there anything to look for whne buying a used club?
Response:
Kevin, The main thing to look for when buying a used club is, how does it feel compared to the rest of your clubs. Do they have a practice net or at least an area where you can swing the club? If so, see if you can bring in your clubs and take a few swings with your irons and then take a few swings with the driver. If it feels right , go for it. The reason for this is simple. If they feel different, you will not swing them the same. It will creep into the rest of your game and cause more problems than it solves. Swing all your clubs the same until you reach the green and have to finesse a wedge. This will improve your game more than anything else I have found in 40 years of play. Hope this helps, Bob Are you a golfer? Are you tired of retail prices? Would you like the opportunity to make golfing a tax deductible expense? http://www.linksworldwide.com/bobchesley

Kevin, Go to a couple of golf shops in your area (or call them) and find out what they sell these clubs for new. I just bought a brand new KC 9 degree driver (graphite stiff shaft) for $99.00. Play it again pays very little for merchandise and then marks it very close the retail sometimes, so beware. Go to ebay.com and see what the latest bids are on comparable clubs. I’ll bet you’ll find their auctions running much cheaper than Play It Again. I agree with the other post… they pay to little and charge too much. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I was in a "Play it Again Sports" the other day.. a chain of second hand sporting goods.. Aesthetics is really all you’ve got to go on, unless the store has a place where you can actually hit the club. Most stores like that do not offer any kind of warranty, which is the only real down-side to buying used clubs. My experience has been that if it’s a good, name-brand club, buying used is a very good, relatively safe way to go. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for supporting our retailers and especially our club pros who make a lot of their living selling new equipment, but since the secondary market makes good golf gear available to a lot of folks who might not otherwise have access to decent stuff, I’m behind it. Just realize that you’re on your own with respect to quality guarantees, warranties, replacements, fittings, etc. Look the club over VERY well, paying close attention to the face and hosel area. Look hard for anything resembling a crack or break. Run your fingernail firmly around the shaft where it fits into the hosel. If you feel or see something, point it out to the salesperson. Remember, in the secondary market it’s generally the name and the head that you’re buying. Shafts and grips can be replaced inexpensively, so don’t be alarmed if the grip is worn or the shaft is beat up a little. Graphite shafts shed their paint easily, but usually the shaft is in good shape structurally. It’s not a bad idea to take along another golfer or two when you look. They may offer suggestions or warnings or whatever that you overlook. Good luck. things to add: Take along a magnifying glass to inspect the head and hosel. If you’re thinking seriously about it, make sure to clean the head and inspect it again; I’ve been amazed at how dirty some of the clubs are in PIAS, and have asked for a wet rag on a couple of occasions. Also, re. price, it is best to know what a clean, flawless club would go for (whether new or used) and think about shaft and grip installation: probably $15-20 plus the materials. How close will that amount added on to the club bring you to the clean club price? Will you be annoyed if you wind up having to spend that much, and might that annoyance spill over onto the golf course? Remember, unless you’ve hit the club, you can’t really tell how much you actually want it. — Paul T. Wilson Prof of Reading

Try West Georgia Golf, www.westgeorgiagolf.com. They have about as many used clubs as anyone I’ve seen.
