Question:
Big Bertha—steel shaft
Response:
It is the driver with – the loft that you can still get more carry than roll – the shaft length you can control – the flexibility adjusted to your swing speed – the sweetspot as big that you hit it more often than you don’t — the driver you find once in your lifetime (if you’re lucky) Mine is Burner Bubble (S 90, 9.5 deg) fore longest drives, and Intimidator (stiff, 10.5 deg) for best control. Well said, Mark! There is no "magic wand". Some clubs work better for some; other clubs work better for others. Cheers! Dave
Here’s a good example of that…my dad buys a $350 Big Bertha, he hits it well, avg 240-250 yds. My father-in-law has a $45 Wal-Mart special, has a very similar swing to my dad, but is consistently straighter and longer that my dad…..go figure! — Cheers…….Cam "Money can’t buy you happiness…..but it can buy you that big yacht to cruise along side and say."Helloooo"" David Lee Roth

The best driver for YOU is the one you get results with whether it be a Big Bertha, A Taylor Made, a ladies Lynx, or in my case, a 60’s Spalding persimmon driver. F. Blaine Dickson, B.A. CPGA ELITE Golf Professional Kelowna BC Canada Take time to dream.

The best driver is the one you hit the best. It’s a myth that one driver is better than the other. I’ve played with guys who sky the Callaway Big Bertha all the time (even with 8.5 loft) but smash the Taylor Made Burner Bubble miles. Similarly others will do well with the King Cobra Titanium and not the Taylor Made. Personally I have a Ben Sayers metal headed driver that I bought 2 years ago from a bargain bucket. I have never hit the ball straighter and my distance is up to 265 yards. Why do I want a Callaway, Taylor Made or King Cobra when I hit this thing better than all of them. You have got to find what feels right in your hands and when you swing it – don’t be taken in by the price or the sales pitch. Mark

I second that!!! (Although my curiosity is high about the new "Biggest Big Bertha.") What’s most important, though, is to determine two things: (1) What is the right shaft flex for you? (2) What is the optimum launch angle for your swing? Doesn’t matter what club you buy…if you buy one with the wrong shaft, or one with a loft that doesn’t produce the optimum launch angle for you, you’ll think you’ve bought a "bad" driver.

The local shop says that anyone who plays a number of tourneys with a gbb gets a cheque for $30 000 from Callaway.

The best kind of driver is the one custom fit to you that matches your swing characteristics and ball flight. Good advice might be to find a clubmaker or fitter in your area and have him or her put you through a fitting. A qualified PGA Pro can do the same. Avoid buying a club off the rack or on someone’s hearsay that it is a good club. What is good for one may not be so good for another. What’s best for me, is not necessarily best for you. There is no absolute best. The only way to be sure you’re getting the optimal driver for you is to try several types, that is regular size, midsize, oversize (also known as regular priced, mid-priced, and overpriced), to try several different lofts. Consulting a teaching pro will also help. One thing’s for sure - more expensive is not to be equated with "better". Also (no sarcasm intended) make sure that you truly want a driver in your arsenal. Some people do better with a 2-wood or a 3-wood off the teeing ground. -Robby P. — "I lay it down as a fact that if all men knew what others say of them, there would not be four friends in the world." – Blaise Pascal (Pensees,1670).
