As many other folks have said, it doesn’t matter what club you use.  Try to leave your ego out of it, and use whatever it takes to get the job done. Cant remember who it was, but a pro was playing a par 3 with an amature. The pro hit a par 3 165 yards. Then the am; both got on the green. The am asks ‘What club ?’. The pro said a five iron, the am said ‘I only used a 7′. The caddy go to out almost all the clubs for the pro. They all went on the green. Mike Williams

I was playing in a scramble event at my local course as the "A" player.  After a decent drive on a par four, we had about 135 yards left to a slightly elevated green.  After my three playing partners hit terrible shots to the green, I hit a shot to about one foot of the hole.  My playing partners asked me what club I hit, since they had all hit 8 and 9 irons.  I asked them if it really mattered and they said, "no."  They asked me again, though, and when I told them I hit a seven iron , they freaked!  How could you hit a seven iron when you are so long?  I usually hit 7 about 160 yards.  I explained to them that it was very early in the season and I felt like hitting a 3/4 7 iron for control, rather than hitting a 9 iron and maybe pulling the ball.  Of course, getting to the green with the 9 iron would not have been a problem; however, using the club that feels right for the shot is more often better than relying completely on the yardage marker. David

Response:

Use whatever club you consistently hit that distance and stick with it until you gain or lose distance on a consistent basis.  There is nothing set in writing and you will find that serious golfers quickly get over the "I can hit it longer than you can" game.  Don’t let your pride get you if your friends are playing 7 irons from 170 while you hit it 130.  If that’s your average distance, then hit the 7 from 130, and forget pride.  : ) Nicholas Stehle Remove "NOSPAM" to e-mail!

Response:

A good rule of thumb is that there should be a 15 yard difference between all of your clubs. If there isn’t, your clubs most likely aren’t fit right, or else there is something wrong with your swing (blame the clubs first ;-0). If this 15 yard rule starts to diminish in your long irons, think about using a 5 or 7 wood.  Why kill yourself trying to hit a perfect 3 iron when you can just hit an easy 5 wood?

Response:

Not to beat a dead horse, but it’s important to remember that there’s no longer any such thing as "standard" lofts.  Many companies strong- loft their irons so people will be impressed by how much farther they can hit that Taylor Made 5-iron than their own.  They hit it farther because it’s actually a 4-iron.  So don’t worry about what your buddies are hitting from 172 – play your own game. I remember reading a story about several people watching Jack Nicklaus hitting balls on the range one day.  He wat hitting a 7 iron 150 yards.  Someone made a comment that he could hit a 7 iron 150 yards.  Jack didn’t say a word.  He hit the next 7 iron 170 yards, the next one 190 and the next one 210 yards.  He then turned to the spectator and said "The difference is, I choose to hit it 150 yards." That would be the great Irishman Christy O’Conner (Snr.) "Himself." There is also the story of Himself. I don’t remember all the circumstances, but as was his usual habit he had been up late the night before his round drinking. Also as was Himself’s style he got to the course and the first tee just in time. While rushing to the first tee, he asked a friend to get a pot of coffee and meet him at a particular tree in a cluster of them to the right of the fairway. The friend went and got the coffee and hurried out to the tree, only to be met shortly after by a goll ball. O’Conner had hit a wicked hook off the first tee and the gallery gasped.  But sure enough, it was right were he wanted it to be, right by his friend with the coffee. Dan King The World Cup was founded to generate international goodwill through golf. Friendship and conviviality are therefore supposed to be essential ingredients of the tournament and Christy O’Conner had a powerful talent for friendship and conviviality. Indeed many good judges are convinced that O’Conner’s genius for hitting a golf ball would have won him several Open Championships if only nature had endowed him less liberally with the conviviality."     –Peter Dobereiner

My mistake. That should be left of the fairway. (right for me when I hit a hook, but O’Conner plays right handed.) Dan King "Are you sure you played all the holes Christy?"  –Henry Cotton (when Christy O’Conner shot 64 in 1985 to break a Cotton’s course record set 51 years earlier)

Joe, you can’t get an answer to this question that means anything. Clubs vary so much in loft that one person’s 9 can be another person’s 7–because they have the same loft!  I suppose that if you could define an "average" swing as having a certain swingspeed, and specified what the lofts were, you *might* be able to approach an answe to your question.  But who has that kind of info? My 8-iron has a 44 degree loft; the seven iron, a 40 degree loft (I just had them measured by my club pro).  I can get 140-145 with the 8, around 155-160 with the 7, when I hit them well. I’ve been looking at the OS/Project heads from GolfSmith, and guess what the 8-iron loft is?  It’s 36 degrees!   Since the typical difference in loft from club-to-club is about 4 degrees from a 6 to a 9 iron (it’s about 3 for clubs lower, but varies from brand to brand), this means my 8-iron is 2 clubs shorter in loft than the OS/Project 8-iron.  In other words, in terms of loft, that OS/P 8-iron probably plays more or less like my 6-iron! If someone asks you how far you hit "an 8 iron," what are you going to tell them?  Obviously, the answer depends on the loft of the club.  If you look on the Golfsmith site (www.golfsmith.com) you can see all sorts of different lofts on various clubs.   What’s important is how far YOU hit each club.  Once you know, then you know!   Mike Dalecki I’ve been looking at some component heads

Thank you all for your great comments, I learned quite a bit.  What I find myself doing is trying to swing harder if I have a long shot.  "WRONG", club selection is the KEY for the distance you want to hit.  I guess the swing does not change. Thanks everyone, I’ll work on it.  Golf is such a GREAT game. jf – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Golfers, Can anybody tell me what the average yardage/distance a particular golf club should deliver with a average swing? I’ll ask you a question.  How many jelly beans are in the jar?  Answer:  "I don’t know, I’ll count[measure] them."   Same way with golf.  There are so many variables: loft of clubs, length of shafts, ball type, launch angle, tee height or no tee, swing speed, wind and weather conditions, altitude, relative elevation of green…  The only answer to that question is via your own trials and experimentation.  Eventually, your experience will allow you to weigh all of those factors for a best guess at any particular time.   From 172 yards, I’ve hit clubs from 9 iron to 3 wood based on the factors in play.   Heck, even the best players in the world with expert caddies often misclub approach shots so don’t assume this is an exact science, BDW

These comments bring to mind one of my favorite "jokes":   Golfer to caddie:  "172 yards.  Do you think I can get there with my                       six iron."   Caddie:            "Eventually." Bob

The answer is simple: whatever club YOU hit that far, and the only way to know is through practice.

Response:

Well, I’m 5′9”, two-hu… umm.. too many pounds.  I’d be between a 5 and a 6 iron, probably would go with the 5 and ease up a little.  Swing speed is pretty good (100ish w/ 3-wood), but for some reason I can’t hit my irons as far as I think I should. Now that really doesn’t help you out with your situation, because only you can determine how far you hit a club.  If it’s more club than a 4-iron I’d say you probably have below-average swing speed.  If it’s less than a 6 you can smoke the ball.  Only you can determine that answer though. Response:

Use any club that will give you that distance with accuracy. Just because you can force a club to hit a certain distance doesn’t make it the ideal one to use for the shot at hand. Learn how far you hit with all the clubs in your bag with a relaxed accurate swing. Choose a club for the distance and swing with the same relaxed accurate swing. Don’t be ego driven. That is a good 6 iron for me, but could be a 5 or a 7 for somebody else. Later Robert

Response:

The best thing to do is learn your yardages and hit whatever is a comfortable swing. Personally, it is a 7 iron for me but most would be a 5 or 6. There is no preset yardage that each club is good for. Every golfer has a different swing and different distance. If you need more club than the next, don’t think something is wrong with your swing, your personally abilities are just different. What club would you normally use??
