Question:
Now my question: Is there some exercise I can do to help with this or is it just a ‘feel’ thing that I develop over time? TIA. Patrick.
My solution is to make a dozen or so "putt" type shots using the wrist rotation only. Then to drive the ball.

The pro has me playing the irons dead center in my stance and the woods 1-2" ahead of dead center. He could be having me do this to simplify things at the early stages of my golf career. I don’t know. I will experiment with moving the ball back in increments for the irons. Thanks for the info. —

Personally, I think its a ‘feel’ type thing. One of the swing thoughts that I use is to try and have the back of my left hand (I’m right handed) facing my target when I come through the ball. "Back of the hand at the target". Maybe it’ll help you too. — Jay "Work is for people who don’t know how to play golf" – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I’ve been warned against soliciting swing advice from the r.s.g group before, but I’ve learned so much from a month of reading that I can’t resist. I’m a first season golfer and have been working hard to learn this game. I’ve had lessons and hit balls at the range every other day for five weeks. I had been having trouble with the driver. I was going right and slicing most of the time. The local pro told me I was not getting my wrists turned quick enough and was striking the ball with a very open face. I worked on this. My wrists eventually started coming around quickly enough to get most shots straight. Now, when I hit irons I’m hooking left. How far back in your stance do you play your iron shots, Patrick? It may be that you’re playing them too far forward and the clubface is closing on its own, rather than through any fault in your swing. Advice that I’ve seen and which works for me is to play your 7-iron midway in your stance and move the ball forward in half-inch increments with the longer irons as the loft decreases and the club length increases. Reverse that for the more lofted and shorter clubs, playing them back towards your rear foot in half-inch increments.
