14 CLUB RULE SUCKS

Question:

I agree. REAL golf will not resurface until the 6 club limit is imposed! ;^) Rob

Why so many? A driver, a wedge and a putter ought to do it… Come to think of it, you can putt with the driver… make that two clubs.  :-) — Eliyahu Rooff www.geocities.com/Area51/Underworld/8096/HomePage.htm RSG Rollcall http://u1.netgate.net/~kirby34/rsg/rooffe.htm

Response:

I say the 14 club limit should only apply to those who use caddies or carts.

Maybe you need some lessons

Response:

I suppose the 14-club rule adds a certain pre-game strategy, since you have to decide ahead of time which club(s) to leave out.  But I agree.  I hate it.  I played yesterday and left my L-wedge in the trunk.  Needed it a half-dozen times. Then again, maybe I’m just used to having 17-18 clubs in my bag all the time, and have become lazy about keeping my skills sharp about "creating" shots.  (Come to think of it, I’ve been pretty lazy about keeping my skills sharp – period, such as they were.) Bottom line:  When playing a recreational round by myself or with strangers, I have my own "14-club rule," which reads:  "Never use more than 14 clubs on any given hole." – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Okay… if I recall correctly, the 14 club limit was instituted in the 20’s because of concern for the children carrying the bags. At that time EVERY golfer had a caddy — and quite often the caddy was a child. This is fine, I don’t want to see 12 year-olds lugging around 50 pounds of clubs in order to earn a dime to feed his starving family either. Today however most golfers don’t have caddies. Many of us walk the course and carry our own bags. I say the 14 club limit should only apply to those who use caddies or carts.

Response:

Why not allow the poor man more than 14 clubs, considering that he will have to carry the burden of extra weight himself?

Ah, but then the poor man is still at a disadvantage since he cannot afford the 52 clubs that the rich man  carries :( ) gary hayenga

Response:

The poor man probably makes his own clubs, and they fit better and are frequency matched, spine aligned, same swing weights, with fresh grips. My $5 goes to the poor guy….. -T- – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Why not allow the poor man more than 14 clubs, considering that he will have to carry the burden of extra weight himself? Furthermore to make the best use of 52 clubs you must invest in a Bushnell laser range finder… if you are ever to pick the correct club. :) dsc

Just by way of interest the 14 club rule was introduced in 1939 (not the 20’s). It was about the same time as all of our steel railings were cut down so that they could be melted down to make new guns. I kind of like the 14 club limit for the reasons Randy listed below, but it wouldn’t bother me if they got rid of it – especially if people were required to haul their clubs on their backs or with a pull cart. I don’t think that MOST people would really benefit from having lots of clubs though. I’ve heard of numerous instances where clubs have had "reduced club" tournaments (i.e. 4 or 6 club limit) and as a whole people shot better scores than normal. When I was about an 18 hcp I used to routinely shoot bogey golf with only three clubs (7i,SW,Putter). I’d reach most greens in one over regulation, and two putt. I’d sneak in a couple of pars, and punish myself with a couple of doubles. Now I’m a 6 hcp and I need to carry a few more clubs to shoot my handicap since I need to reach more greens. Still, it only takes about 8 clubs when I’m playing well – usually 3w, 5w, 4-6-8i, pw, sw, putter. Sometimes I’ll alternate even and odd irons on successive rounds. When I shoot my hcp like this it makes me wonder why I usually lug 14 clubs around on my back.     A couple of years ago, I had a hip replaced and had been riding in the hated cart since then.  Recently, I bought an incredibly light Ping Mantis bag, put half my clubs in the garage and started walking again.  The game is just a whole lot more enjoyable to me when walking.  My scores have actually gotten lower and club selection sure takes a lot less time.     … Tom

Response:

My dad told me that Walter Hagen was, in part, responsibile for the 14 club limit.  He used to carry closed faced and open faced versions of the same clubs for dogleg holes.  He carried clubs that could be swung left-handed. Hey, with a strong enough caddy a clever pro could really bring a course to its knees.  Of course most amatuers [myself included] wouldn’t do much worse with just 2 woods, 4 irons and a putter instead of 14 but…
