Titleist DT balls "bulging"

Question:

I threw one off into the trees over the weekend that had a definite bump on it like something inside had tried to punch it’s way out. Have played many of the titleist DT 2pc and 3pc…the balls are soft and I have had a couple go "out of round" but have never seem a "bump" develop

There’s a virus that eats the rubber bands and when the viral population excedes a certain level, they try to break out and infect other golf balls. Sometimes they get on your golf gloves instead and wreck havoc with the leather. This can be easily prevented by sterilizing your golf balls (boiling in water for several minutes) once a month or so. Thanks for making me aware of the rubber virus! I think the rubber virus has infected my Uncle Smitty’s slingshot factory, and our rubber bands are bulging all over the place. I think the factory may have caught the rubber virus from one stray ballata that was eaten by a goose, then the goose flew over my uncles factory and pooped the ball into the rubber supply. Please do what you can to prevent the rubber virus! Dip your balls into boiling water before playing the back nine. A concerned citizen. - Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Has this happened to you? Some of the Titleist DT (3-piece) balls I use develop a "bump" after a while!  If you lift the ball up and look at the roundness you’d see a bump.  This has happened to me on several occassions and, as far as I can tell, there was no unusual use of the ball(s). Is this a warranty-related problem Bob, Don’t know about the warrantee, but I’ve got a few of the balls with a "bump" in them sitting on a shelf. No unusual hits or rough landings, in fact one of them is brand new. Be interesting to find out if they’re worth a new sleeve like a cut ball is.

This is usually a sign that the windings have broken.  This is most likely caused by a thin or bladed shot with a golf club.  The leading edge of the club breaks the underlying rubber band forming the bump. If you use a professional ball this will happen more easily than with the DT Wound.  Check with a prop shop or call Titleist.  They also have a web page. No unusual use of the ball!  Whaddya call smacking it with metal object at 100mph? <g If after a while means 5 or 6 holes, I’d say it’d be a dud batch. If you’re getting a couple of games in, I guess that’s the life of the ball. Steve
