Three club golf

Question:

1 iron for tee, second shot on par 5’s and green 5 iron for in tee to 125 9 iron for under 125 and sand

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – My friends and I waste some time, on occasion, by playing with a reduced number or only one club ( guess which club is used in "fourplay?"). Three club games seem the most popular. I was just  curious what three the members of the erudite list would choose. Mine? 5 (or 7 if I’m shakey) wood, 7iron and putter. Sparky

Response:

5-wood, 8-iron, GW.  Putt with the wood and 8-iron – I doubt I’d even miss mu putter. Response:

I was playing (badly) once with some friends and hurt my back a little on #7.  Not wanting to stop, but not able to carry my bag for nine more holes, I grabbed my 3-wood, 8-iron, and putter and played the back.  Shot an 88. 47 on the front nine with all my clubs, 41 on the back with just those three.  Hit a couple great shots out of greenside bunkers with my 8-iron, too. Chris – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – For those of you who play these games, please post your handicap and your score when playing with 4 clubs. In my case over 9 holes I pretty much played my usual bogie game!

Response:

Thats funny…my friends call me sparky also…but I do agree with your selection of clubs…I would choose the same because: putter- for the obvious reason, 3wood to help with the longer holes , and a 7iron for its loft and good distance/feel – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – My friends and I waste some time, on occasion, by playing with a reduced number or only one club ( guess which club is used in "fourplay?"). So we get a chart of; 5W   7I   Putter 3I   7I   Putter 4I   8I   Putter 5I   9I   Putter I’m wondering why a putter seems to be a defacto requirment.  I would think you could putt by chocking up on a long iron and replace the putter with a scoring wedge or a fairway wood (depending on your game and the course.)

I think I have seen others post before when this question comes up, that they do choose a driver and use it as their putter.  This would allow a Driver, 5 Iron, and maybe a PW. Better range selection if you could use the driver as a putter.  For me, I think that I would want that feel of the putter to actually feel more confident making longer putts. Today, for grins and giggles I played alternating holes with a semi full bag (3W 5W 7W 5-9I PW SW Putter) and the next with 7W 7I Putter (old 10deg Burke blade-good around the fringe) typical beginning of season bogie-double bogie but the 3-club holes were 3 strokes better, bogies on the par 5’s even?? I use the fairway woods better than the long irons btw, chip better w/ the 7 than pitch with the wedges. Sparky – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Tim
