Actually I think that’s the real question. Any of you out there into ball balancing tried the following experiment: Find the heavy side of a ball, play it for a few holes, and then measure again to see if that heavy spot is in the same place? Every time I hit a crisp iron shot I remove a little "skin" off the cover. I can’t believe that a solid hit with a driver doesn’t reshape the ball just a bit. Sure, I could see a really poorly made ball be so out of balance that it will retain that heavy spot even after a few holes of severe abuse, but my guess is that unless you are playing in a competition that allows you to use a special ball for putting, by the time you’ve hacked your way to the green a couple of times the balance of that ball isn’t what you carefully measured. — http://home.att.net/~wamontgomery )

removing that ’skin’ will affect ball flight.. just like those baseball pitchers who scuff the ball.. put a dime sized ’scuff’ using a small piece of sandpaper from a paper punch that is super glued to the inside of your ring finger.. put the scuff on the opposite side of the way you want the ball to go.. (only works laterally or on hte X axis really) but it will make a well thrown fastball ’slide’ or run into or away from a hitter.. Mike Scott (mets and astros pitcher) resurrected his career with something like this.. i hit an 8 iron out of the rough the other day.. super tough lie.. Pro V1 ball and still managed to put a little smiley in it.. but hit a great shot from about 150 to a super tight green (about 10 feet) and i just put the ball in my shag bag.. my game suffers enough from inside outs and open/closed faces that i don’t need to add insult to injury with a ball that might go ANOTHER 5-10 yards right or left on a drive… r
