Question:
I have been low-carbing since mid Aug. and the first three and a half weeks started off great!! The weight and inches seemed to come off with little effort. I have been following the Atkins plan and was able to get into ketosis quite easily… That’s the good news….. now the bad… After about three weeks it was like I hit a brick wall. I have had NO weight loss over the last three weeks plus and think I may have even gained a pound or two back. I cannot seem to figure out what I am doing differently from the first three. My diet has stayed virtually the same and I am still consuming well under 20g of carbs per day. The only thing I have added to my diet is a daily Atkins bar. My ketosis sticks have been getting progressively lighter to the point where there is BARELY a noticeable color change at all now… Any suggestions on how I might kick my body back into ketosis and continue on with the weight loss would be appreciated. Morning, Derek! Fear not. It’s not bad news. Some people here have been stalled or plateaued for months! Slowdowns – and even outright halts – will occur from time to time. Consider it a readjustment period (I don’t think anyone knows the one true real reason it happens…maybe there isn’t one) before the next downward trend. I wouldn’t "tweak," or change anything, just yet, if I were you. (This is just my opinion, however, so take it or throw it away.) Sometimes we want to fix what’s not yet broken, you know? Give yourself a few more weeks. If things don’t happen during that time, then maybe it’s time to cut some things out, like maybe the Atkins bars or some extra cream or cheese or artificial sweeteners. Hang in there, Derek. It’ll happen! You are showing a perfectly normal weight loss pattern. Instead of a gradual slope downwards low-carb especially seems to cause us to lose weight in steep slopes followed by a period of no weight loss followed (sometimes after a small RISE) with another steep slope down. I won’t bore everyone by going, yet again, into my theory why this happens. You’d have to read my past posts. If you have Excel 95 or more, use my progress chart and watch the line graph grow on the 2nd page. After a few more months you may see a pattern developing and may even be able, to some degree, to predict your weight loss pattern. — Ev 20/06/2000 168/159/147 If you want a carb counter and a progress chart and have Excel95 or + I have them free at my web site at http://www.znet.freeserve.co.uk/

Hi Derek. The longer you settle in to a low carb lifestyle, the more you’ll see things like this happen. Often it’s just your body readjusting after a weight loss. I no longer panic or fear when my body does peculiar weight things. For instance, I typically lose 4-5 lbs. in a couple of days, and then nothing for weeks. This week, in fact, I gainedd 5 lbs. overnight, and have lost 1 lb. of it so far. I haven’t changed anything, and no ketosis registers on my sticks. So? I know I didn’t change anything, and my body will eventually figure it out. Remember, this is a LIFESTYLE change, not a diet. If you know you’re following the plan, in the long run, it all works out. Keep up the good work. ~Wendy. Atkins 6/00: 244/215/144 – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I have been low-carbing since mid Aug. and the first three and a half weeks started off great!! I’ve read a lot of posts where people stop losing for 3-6 weeks then start again. You might be losing inches or your body might just be catching up and getting ready for round two…I think a "real" stall lasts a bit longer that 3 weeks. Be patient this is where it would be easy to blow it, just hang on for a few more weeks and then take another look. Also some people stop losing with the Atkins bars so you might want to limit to 1-2 a week and increase your water if you haven’t already. Good luck Fran

Hi Derek, Try a week or so without the daily Atkins bar. If that makes no difference, you know they aren’t the problem. Then single out some other food (or food group) that may be the cause. Another question – are you subtracting the fiber from the carb counts of all the foods you eat? If so, you may be subtracting from foods that have already been subtracted – they seem to be in the majority. How about medications – have you started any in the past three weeks? Do you exercise at all? Don’t give up hope. You’ve done just fine so far – 16 pounds in 6 weeks is pretty darn good. It isn’t the speed that counts anyway, it’s the goal.
