Shame on me!

Question:

I broke one of the cardinal rules of rose planting."Thou shalt not plant roses one on top of another." Dumb, dumb, dumb…I know better than to do this. My Rotes Meer and Theresa Bugnet are gouging each other in the ribs. Theresa: "Move over, Rotes,,,,and stop dropping all those &*#$ hips all over me." The lady must’ve been daft to plant you so close to me! Rotes Meer: HIPS!! HIPS!! I’ll tell you who’s got the hips, old girl! Man, if she comes near you with anymore fertilizer this summer, I’ll thunk her upside the head. Shall I let them battle it out for the rest of the season and move someone in the winter? Daunting thought. The Rote Meer is suckering like crazy —an aspect that is welcome — but, right on through her neighbor? And the Theresa Bugnet towers about 92 feet tall. Both are healthy as heck, robust and have been blooming wonderfully since I planted them three seasons ago. Maybe just lift the suckers when the time is right? Space is not a premium for me. Same old excuse,,,we were moving in our new house and time was not on my side when I planted these two. Suggestions? Thoughts? Insults? Rotten produce?(Hey, don’t get carried away.) Hoocheypucker

92 feet? Interesting. I say take a blowtorch to it.

Response:

And as always, Pat, you’ve said it all… if I tried to transplant either of these I’d lose one or both.

Well, I’d say pretend you did it on purpose to make a really interesting and different look <g Valarie               Zone 8, Louisiana

Did you by any chance notice the lethal weapons these guys get? Notice? Notice!? How could I miss them??? But, I don’t complain about the daggers they throw out; it’s one of the attributes that attracted me to Rotes Meer. Living barriers with the most delicious clove scent and gorgeous color, magnificent hips the size of golf balls this year. At my last house I planted a Rotes Meer and a Hansa. Not withstanding Hansa’s popularity, I’ve found Rotes Meer to be a better shrub, though not as tall as Hansa. Wonder why it isn’t more widely planted. And as always, Pat, you’ve said it all… if I tried to transplant either of these I’d lose one or both.

Too late!  If they are suckering, you’ll never get them out.  heheh.  You might try prunning Theresa barer at the bottom to give Rotes Meer some more airspace. But then, I’m sure any fight between you and these two would leave you the loser, if not hospitalizd.  Did you by any chance notice the lethal weapons these guys get? – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -I broke one of the cardinal rules of rose planting."Thou shalt not plant roses one on top of another." S’pose I could take a blowtorch to her, but then I’d miss the fine display Theresa Bugnet puts on all winter. In fact, I think I like this rose better when it’s dormant,,,,those dark burgundy stems showing up against the winter landscape. Gorgeous sight! Hoochey

If they’re both big, wait until fall or winter.  Cut the one you’re moving back about 2/3 (to compensate for the roots you’ll lose in the move), pop it in the already dug hole in its new location, and water like crazy until it recovers. BTW – you’re not the only one.  I’m going to have to relocate a bunch of stuff this winter.  Drat ARE for being cautious about the sizes they advertise! — Lynn Thomson San Antonio, TX – Zone 8b http://www.txdirect.net/users/lthomson/roses.html

Response:

Oh, that is a good point, Lynn. Often I wonder where in tarnation they come up with those H x W numbers. I mean we know that a lot depends on climatic conditions; but, come on, a climber listed at ultimate height of six feet … TAH! in my yard can be 18 feet in a couple or three years. Hey, does that mean I’m not responsible? Guess so, regardless of what the catalogue reads, I should know better. Hoochey Pucker
