Question:
Cambrian Ridge is fantastic. Some of the tee shots have a 200-300 drop to the landing area, most holes are on rolling terrain. The trees are impressively tall. An amusement park of golf. When my brother and I arrived the staff immediately tried to take our clubs and put them on a cart. They said that no one walks this course. We did, and the challenge of walking up the steep hills acentuated the experience. Golf carts are for pussies.
I was thinking of hitting the trail this year during vacation…. The
prices look great for what you get; again, any info would – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – be appreciated. Thanks!

We played 6 of the 7 last June during the heat wave. we played 18 holes instead of our usual 27 per day. The motels we stayed at were thru the Holiday Inn golf package deal and and it was much cheaper than thru the R.T.J. package. We travel 2 times a year to play golf and as you can see if you visit our site at www.members.tripod.com/~golfparsandbogies we tell a little about the courses we have played.
I zigged, I zagged now I’m less confused!Rusty

One of airline magazines had a good article on playing the trail. I think it was American Airlines or United. Green fees sounded very reasonable to me. (For people who haven’t heard of this golfing destination, http://www.rtjgolf.com/index.html) My brother has played a couple of them and says they’re awesome. Anybody here ever play any of these tracks and know which are the best and which ones (if any) should be avoided? There’s 300+ holes over the seven different locations (a par-3 short course at each – great idea!), is it possible to play them all in a week or are you better of playing a couple of sites each year? Thanks for the tip – do you have any info on the Prattville site? The RTJ wedsite lists seven locations on the map but gives eight phone numbers, there’s nothing on the map for "Capitol Hill". Thanks again. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – proximity and stick to that area. For instance, Grand National, the new Prattville site, and Cambrian Ridge are all within two hours of each other. If you check the ratings in the golf magazines, you’ll know that

I can find out tomorrow. I know that they are only allowing 80 or so players a day right now. The links style course is the only one open, and I think it is cart path only for a while. The price however, is the same as the other courses. I’ll try to find the phone number.

Played Silver Springs and both courses at Grand National for package price $113 Stayed in a Hampton Inn near National for $32 per person per night. Played the short courses at both clubs. Cart fees $15 club house food is reasonable. Beautiful courses in great shape now . Lots of water holes , bring lots of balls.

Well worth the trip if you’re looking for world class golf at muni prices. I would suggest that you pick a couple of sites in close proximity and stick to that area. For instance, Grand National, the new Prattville site, and Cambrian Ridge are all within two hours of each other. If you check the ratings in the golf magazines, you’ll know that Grand National and Cambrian Ridge always receive high marks for quality. Plus, the Trail sites usually have an "all-day" rate going this time of year. Like a previous poster said, it’s very inexpensive down here in Alabama, and the rates at the courses prove it. You’ll be able to find some pretty economical hotel packages as well. What you save playing golf may be used in purchasing golf balls, though.
Good luck with your trip. —Share what you know. Learn what you don’t.—

Looks like the whole thing (including hotels) can be done for around $1k – you can’t beat that considering the quality of the courses. The Green Fees go down in the summer, can’t imagine the hotel rates will go up. Like everything else in the South, it’s cheaper in the summer. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Go for it and have fun you only live once.Let us know how it is.From what i read the hotels are included with the package price. The prices i saw expire may 31st though. You better hurry!

Why is that? What’s so expensive? Green fees look within reason….Are auxiliary fees such as hotels meals really that expensive in Alabama? Especially Gadsen, Huntsville etc. Curious, because I have been thinking about making the trip also. Corky Bring lot’s of money!
No, everything is cheap down here. All of the courses are great, but Grand National is my favorite. I still haven’t played the new course because they are only offering limited play. But in two years I should have 72 fantastic holes just 10 minutes from the house. Also – if you plan to play here more than twice a year buy a Trail Card. For $30 you get $10 off each round and a discount in the proshops. The Card is good on all of the courses. Bring lot’s of balls.

I went down with some bogey-golfing buddies last month and had a good time. To make reservations for golf and hotel you just call the toll-free number found on their web page. They didn’t ever respond to two e-mails I sent. Be prepared to leave a message, as in the many times I called I never spoke to a reservations agent on the first try. It usually took them a day to return the call. You pay green fees and a 10% hotel downpayment up front. You pay the hotel bill (about $30 per golfer per night) at each location upon checkout, and golf cart fees at each course. We flew into Birmingham and played 36 at Oxmoor Valley on a Saturday. The staff at all the sites we golfed were cordial, but we received extraordinary service here. We liked the Ridge a little better than the Valley, but they were both fine courses. The greens fees are reasonable, and the second 18 is half price. Riding carts are expensive at $19 per rider per 18, but include a GPS screen with an overhead view and occasional suggestions. It was a novelty that didn’t wear off. The Masters was that weekend and the leaderboard was displayed too. Next we played 27 at Silver Lakes. The course was easy to find with clearly marked signs directing us to the middle of nowhere. At that time, this course was greener than Oxmoor Valley. We would have played 9 on the par-3 course, but wanted to watch the end of the Masters in the clubhouse. The clubhouses were very nice, but strangely identical. Then we played 36 at Grand National. There is a reason that the golf magazines rate this the highest, we did too. Very asthetic, challenging and memorable. Since we had to fly home out of Birmingham, we returned for 36 more at Oxmoor Valley. When I return to the trail I will not try to go to so many courses. I think I would play two days at Grand National, and a day or two at Cambrian Ridge and the new course being finished (I forget the name). We played from 8:00 to 7:00 each day, drove for two hours, check-in, ate dinner late, and didn’t have much time left for anything else. Usually my buddies and I golf in Minnesota or Wisconsin. For comparison, I would rank Grand National to be on par with University Ridge (Madison, WI where I live) or The Pines at Grand View (Nisswa, MN), but lower than Blackwolf Run (Kohler, WI). Some guys I work with went down earlier in April and seemed to like the courses even better than I did. Maybe thats because they didn’t struggle so hard to break 90!
